So this morning I was changing the abs wire harnesses on my sons '04 GT. I started the car and drove it up on ramps. Spliced in the new harnesses and went to start the car. No dice. Engine does not turn and I do not hear the solenoid engage. I checked the fuse panel under the hood and checked fuse #24 (good) and relay # I think 32 (good). Used a multimeter and have 12.7 at the battery. I have power to the solenoid. I had my daughter turn and hold the key to start to check the ignition wire and get no juice. So I figure it is an ignition switch issue. That is unless I have forgotten to check something. Any ideas?

I did check the solenoid. Power to the solenoid but no power to the purple ignition wire when key is held at start. No room to safely jump the solenoid. I do not have a suitable jumper wire.

I also pulled the ignition switch. Can anyone tell me which wire is for the start out circuit?

Okay here is what took place. I replaced the ABS wiring harnesses in the front of the car. While changing them I did not disconnect the battery. I cut the old wires and spliced in the new ones. I rechecked multiple times on my work during the day to make sure I didn't cut any other wires. I did not disconnect any other connectors. When I went to start the car no power through the ignition wire to the solenoid. I replaced the starter knowing it wouldn't fix the problem (but I was hopeful) but it is an original so I said what the hell. I also replaced the battery since I did not know how old it was. I tried to replace the ignition switch but cannot figure out how to remove the wires or the lock cylinder. Any help in that area would be appreciated. I checked all fuses and all are good. When I check the "ELEK IGN" I get nothing. I replaced the ignition relay with a good one and still nothing. So what happened. Did cutting the ABS harnesses without disconnecting the battery fry the computer? Forgot to mention that everything else electric is working fine. Just when I turn the key I get no ignition. Turned on the headlights and no dimming. Oh and after all of this the ABS and TC are still disabled. FML. So any help would be so appreciated. If I do not get some info, either through here or my searching tonight, I am having the car towed to the Buick dealer in town. Really don't want to do that but I am at a loss. Thanks

hers a good how to for the ignision harness covers the key tumbler too, is for a 02 but they are all pretty much the same. Sparky's Answers: 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix, Changing The Ignition Switch

and all dummy lights come on with the key turned to run. they go off after its running.

you should have enough room to jump the starter with a screw driver or the dip stick even. if it cranks and runs via jumping the starter at least its drive able.

dont have a clue as to why this would happen by cutting abs wires and replacing the harness, the car was off, theres no power to it when keyed off. should have been ok.

All lights come on but the MIL, ABS, and TC stay lit. Mileage error shows up in DIC along with ABS and TC disabled. When I turn it to start all lights go out. But no power through ignition wire to solenoid. Thanks for the link to the switch but that switch is way different than mine. Not even close. But I appreciate it. I also went and changed the starter relay but that didn't work. Do you know if I change the ECM, and if mine is bad, will plugging a good one in get the car started? What I mean is will the computer need to be programmed before it will work at all?

to get the tumbler out of the column they all use a pick in the top small hole to release it, (iirc) you need the key in the lock, then turn it and pull it out.

Tried the key in and pulling. My cylinder doesn't have a release pin. There is a slot. I tried pressing in on that but no dice. I spent maybe two hours trying to change the switch and got nowhere. I had the battery disconnected during the replacement. Had to be disconnected for at least 45 min. I will disconnect it now and reconnect in the morning. Can anyone comment on changing the computer? I have never done that before on any car so I am unaware if plugging in a new one will work without programming.

pretty sure it would need to be from the same year and engine car you have. should just be plug and play.

Okay that sounds good. Would you assume that the "mileage error" for the odometer would point to the computer? That is what I am thinking. But not sure what I did to cause the computer to crap out.

Also where is the mileage stored? ECM (ECU, PCM all the same) or the BCM? Or somewhere else? I have a feeling if I can solve that issue the car might start

I reconnected the battery this morning and still nothing. I found the procedure for changing the ignition switch and did that. Still nothing. Went to the Buick dealer to see if they can get the car in today. They said they would try. So I go home and figure I would try it one more time. Turned the key and the "starting disabled due to theft system" came up. First time I saw that. So for about an hour and a half I have been trying to do the relearn and still nothing. So called AAA and waiting for the truck to arrive. Seems like my computer(s) went into a deep sleep and slowly are coming back. I am starting to hate this car. But it runs beautifully at 155,000 when it will start
