Hey guys, new to the forum as I have finally found a problem that I cannot solve myself and before just throwing money at the car, I wanted to get some of the experts opinions.
Its a 99 Grand Prix GT. Got about 194k miles. 3.8 Non supercharged. It has the "Auto" cooling and heat function on the system as well.
Here is the problem. The blower motor is acting very goofy and I know that there are a few common issues with these systems in general, but I havent seen or read about one like this, trust me Ive done some research.
Last winter the blower started making weird noises when the car was first started, kind of like clunking noise or a screeching belt type of noise. It would happen when the car was warming up and then eventually would go away and work fine. After a few months of that eventually the motor stopped working altogether. This is just hearsay because it is not my car, but my mothers as I am her so called "mechanic".
Anyways, I know the main failure on these cars is the "resistor pack" or whatever they are called. I have also heard that sometimes the "ignition switch" or something to do with the ignition can fail as well.
Here is where I am at. I had taken the blower out of the car, I tested it with some thin gauge jumper wire and alligator clips and the fan blows and seems to blow very fast. It was weird tho, with the thin gauge wire jumping it from the battery the wire seemed to get VERY HOT, almost to the point of burning my hand after I left it run for about 10 seconds. Im guessing that because the wire was so thin that was the issue???? Like I said the fan ran real fast when testing it.
So after finding out my resistor pack or solenoid or whatever its called costs 159 from my local O reilleys, I went back and tried to see if it would work again in the car. So I plugged it back in and it still didnt work, BUT here is where it gets weird. I started the car, and went through the fan cycles, and every once in a while when on any random setting the fan will kick on a SUPER SLOW speed for about 3 seconds then it proceeds to shut back off. Like I said it is just random when it does kick on and It isnt on any one setting, but the fan once in a while will kick turning really slow for about 3-4 seconds.
I am hesitant to just throw a solenoid on it at 160 bucks because most auto places dont let you return electrical parts, so if you guys have any idea or have heard of a fan acting like this PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let me know what you think because as we all know summer is approaching soon and dont need mom to have a heat stroke in the black leather seats!
