Battery

So I'm needing to get a new battery for Prix in about a month once I start driving it again. I couldn't find a thread on this forum about car batteries so I thoughts I'd make one and see what kinda batteries everyone is running and what is good a brand and what isn't. I've read that the EverStart batteries from Wally World are the best for the price and they have a warranty on them. But besides... What is the best one to go with? EverStart? Interstate? Exide? DieHard? Legend (napa)? What would you suggest I would buy that is a great battery?

Everstarts are known as Neverstarts in the shop I work in.

We sell Interstate battery's when customers need a new one, I think they are some of the best out there. We'll also sell them a Napa Legend if so choose it.

Walmart batteries are cheap for a reason. They don't last long.

I work at advance so I see what batteries fail more times than others.

And honestly, I would go with either a Gold series battery from Advance or Autozone. They are worth the money and last a good amount of time.

Do not get an optima battery. It is not needed on a stock car. You should research battery companies on google. You will find that there are only about 3 complete corporations that manufacture different battery brands.

I did read that there is only 2 or 3 corps that make batteries. And i was just throwing the idea about the everstart batteries from wally world to get an opinion cause i figured anything sold from wally world is usually cheap therefore made cheap and crappy. so when i was reading i was a little confused why people were saying go with walmart..

I always get people coming into advance for pricing on batteries. They ask if I will price match Walmart, I say no because I will not sell my batteries for the price of junk. Also, what most don't realize is, that our stores see little to nothing from battery sales.

When I tell them this, they go to walmart and I see them about 5 months later when they have a **** battery.

The EverStart brand of car batteries

sold by Wal-Mart is manufactured by 3 different companies. Some EverStart batteries are made by Delphi; other batteries are manufactured by Johnson Control and Exide.

Both are good batteries that I have seen go plenty of years.

im running an AC Delco. No problems in Wisconsin winters. Started right up when parked outside overnight with a few nights of -5 below this season.

I'm all for staying with an original battery.

But, around 2005, AC Delco batteries started getting kinda crappy in quality. In 2011 I started seeing a large number of 06-07 gm cars coming in for a new battery due to a bad cell in the oem battery. Mainly these cars consisted of G6's. I don't know if it was something wrong with the electrical system in the G6 or it is just that group of batteries.

Now, most people will want to argue with me that a battery lasts about 5 years....Which, yes, I will agree. But, when I still have early 2000s GM vehicles coming in with over 100k on the clock and the original battery, that is where I got curious.

I got a Road Runner a few months ago. Got an extra 300 CCA and saved $60 by skipping the "replacement" glass mat battery, and just buying what fits. Probably not recommended, but works for me.

That is what most people want to do. But, what they don't realize is, that we will not install the battery. And people tend to get fussy about that. Oh well lol

Ha. I just took the battery in with me, and held it up to the ones on the shelf. I later on found the battery group for my old battery while casually looking at something else. That would have been helpful in the store. I ended up with the right group though. With my old Bonneville I had a really large battery box, and found a 1200 CCA battery that would fit in it. The GP has no such room for expansion though.

at advance:

Silver battery: 2 years free replacement
Gold battery: 3 years free replacement/84 month pro-rated warranty

As mentioned above. Most batteries are made by the same 3 manufacturers. Johnson Controls (JCI) makes most of them. AC Delco's have served me well for the most part, but I have seen some poor service from some when I was working on cars. With that they cost, I just couldn't justify the additional $$$. I have run Everstarts in my cars for years. They last about average. The reason I run them, they are cheap (not as much as they used to) and Wal Marts are everywhere. Wal Mart also has long hours. I have run replaced a battery at midnight under warranty. You can't do that many places.

Personally, I won't touch Interstate. We used to have terrible service with them. I understand many of there batteries are manufactured in Mexico.

Optima's have become junk over the last few years. Most people swear 2004 was when they became junk, but I cannot pinpoint it that closesly.

Deka seems to be one of the best out there currently. They are priced reasonably and really well made. They make a ton of industrial batteries that have to work because the equipement and trucks they are in make $$$. If they don't work, the company is losing money. I have their Intimidators in my diesel truck and one in my Jeep. They have been abused and still work great. They are made at their own facility in Penn, not overseas like many other brands. You might have to call Deka to find out who is a retailer near you. They also make many of Napa's house brand batteries. If you call Deka, they can tell you the Napa part #.

One thing to remember, cars today have much more electronic dependence and are harding on batteries / alternators than cars did 20 years ago. When I worked on cars I got sick of hearing the stories about how batteries used to last 10 years, etc. In modern cars, we used to see 3 years as the average service life. I tend to also buy batteries for their warranty. If I can get 3 years free replacement, I am happy. Anything past 3 years, I consider a bonus.

Basically, all batteries are made by three companies: Johnson Controls, Exide, and Delphi.
Delphi makes some EverStart (Walmart) and AC Delco.
Johnson Controls makes Duralast (Autozone), Diehard (Sears), Kirkland (Costco), Motorcraft (Ford), Interstate, and some of the EverStarts.
Exide makes Exide, Champion, NAPA, and some EverStart batteries.
