So I purchased an oil catch can after several people on ls1tech recommended I do. It looks super simple to install but there's one adapter I can't figure out what its for.
    uploadfromtaptalk1359065168328.jpg

This is the piece I can't figure out what its for. I took it completely apart to see if I could figure it out and I couldn't

    uploadfromtaptalk1359065184256.jpg

This is it taken apart. It had the hose clamps around the two pieces and has just a tad of lube on the inside of the plastic tube that goes over the two metal pieces. One of the metal pieces is hollow and one is completely solid. As u can see

Perhaps it works like a PCV valve, opens when there is enough pressure?

What would open? The completely solid piece? When I looked over on ls1tech at one already installed I didn't even see a piece like that in the tubing system. That's why its stumped me

Its purpose is to prevent any oil from going back through the top feed line.

It goes inline with the top feed line.

You don't need it but it doesn't hurt to have.

But its solid on one end so I can't see how it would go with any of the vacuum lines. It appears to me it would stop air flow

don't use it. that is a weird looking one but i am 90% sure it is a check valve.

Plain and simple, you really don't need it.

The ls4 engines are known for burning oil. And this helps prevent a large part of it. A couple guys I talked to said in a 4-5 month range that theirs got half full

yes sir ls4, Just talkin shop, before gp i had a 2g talon, rebuilt the engine (420a 2.0l n/a) ported hell outta the head, intake manifold, tb, speed pro pistons, moly rings, oem had pm rods so was good there, balenced short block, played with the timing gears, ahahhhahah no real aftermarket so all you could do is machine the hell outta it.
anyway that car was such a slug for a street car, it had a 60' time a hair under 3sec. when you get to 4000rpm you start to accelerate like a '90 s-10 with a wore out 4.3.
Any time i was rat bagging the snot outta her, shiftin at 7500, the cylinder head would fill up with oil. On the valve cover on the passenger side there was the pcv system, and on the driverside there was a vent the went to the plastic intake tube inbetween the tb and cone filter (no maf). on the intake tube there was some sorta silencer box that would fill up with oil from that vent, and once full would start gettin sucked down the engine and id have a rich blue cloud tailin me. So what i did was i took a 1 liter juice box (tetra pack) and put it in the upper corner of the engine bay by the brake booster, had a perfect fit. I ran a hose from the valve cover to the juice box and it had a breather on it. Now when i beat the crap outta poor car it would fill the box up with a ounce of oil for a hard day driving,

    thats what made me wonder

1/4 mile times of 18.12, mabey 17mpg in the city, i dont know what i was thinkin, sold car

i only put 8 thousand mile till i got rid of, i just emptied the box on the days i was baggin on it which was quite a bit. In that 1 litere box the oil would be about 1/2 inch up on a hard long cruise, over time it would add up. little relevence to a ls4,

It's not a check valve. I have the same catch-can on my 01...I didn't use that piece. I have no idea what it's actually for.

Make sure you stuff that catch can with a stainless steel scrubber.

The scrubber is used to help catch more oil. Otherwise it will just short-circuit to the outlet. It's also beneficial to put hoses on the inlet and outlet.

Similar to what I used...just make sure they are stainless steel, because you will get a mixture of oil and water collecting in there.
Amazon.com: Stainless Steel Scrubber Pads, Set of 2 by Miles Kimball: Home Improvement

And some of the mods I did to help the catch can perform better.
Drilled the holes bigger for more flow.

Installed hoses into the catch-can on the fittings to extend them to prevent "short-circuiting"

    RTV to help it seal.
