I've got a noise coming from my front end and I can't seem to pin point where its coming from. Its a 04 Grand Prix GTP. The other day I was making a left hand turn and heard what sounded like a "pop". Right after that I heard a noise that sort of sounds like breaks grinding. The noise gets louder when I go faster and doesn't matter what gear I'm in or coasting in neutral. I hear it when I'm going straight and it gets worse when I turn left. So I took both calipers off to make sure it wasn't something with the breaks and everything looks normal. I've also been having problems lately with the ABS and Traction Control lights coming on which I've read could be a sensor/hub or possibly just the wiring. So me being the dummy I am jumped the gun and thought it was the driver side wheel hub. Well that wasn't the problem but as least now I have a new hub. I'm hoping its not the passenger side hub because the threads at the end on the CV shaft are completely rusted away. I can't imagine ever getting the axle nut off, let alone getting it back on.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

I've had the CV make grinding and popping noises like that.

It only "popped" once. After that its just the grinding noise.

jack the pass side up, leave the wheel on, and push and pull the tire softly to see if you have a lot of movement, anything more that a 1/8 of a inch movement and the hub is bad, that would also make the abs light come on.

bad connections or bad wires can also make the abs light come on so while your there clean and put a small dab of di electrical grease on the plug end and work the plug off and on a few times to work the grease in. also check the hub sensor wire harness along the lca's. they get damaged or break, or loose insulation and go bad.

if its not the d/s, why not the pass side? its a free check, and the lights still on right?

any hoo, lol if none of this helps, the free checks that is, having the car scanned is the next step as to not just toss parts at it.

Yea, could be pass side. Noises from the front can be quite confusing.

I just checked to see if there was any play in the tire. There is the smallest amount of play when I push and pull on the top of the tire. The amount is so small that I can't even gauge it to say that it would be over 1/8".

Rico -- I replaced the driver side hub but I'm worried it may actually be the passenger side hub.

    This test was driver's side?

This test just now was the passenger side. The driver side has the new hub and is solid.

Since it makes the noise mostly when turning left then yea, it might be the pass side hub. Left turn shifts weight to the right side of the car.
If it's not the hub then I would go after the CV joints.

mine was like that a bit of slop, and my light was coming on from time to time. that was a year ago, then the light started to come on more and more, i checked all the hubs for play and the one with that little bit o slop, now had lots of play in it, enough to make the car drift on the highway.

changed it and the car has stopped drifting, and the abs light is less of a problem, once in a blue moon it will set off when i first start the car and drive off. if it goes off i stop, turn the car off, open the door, shut it, and start over.

i do this because when my abs light comes on the steering gets stiff, and either the brakes or the trans is holding the car back and i dont have the heart to drive it like that.

I guess I can take off the passenger side hub to see if that's the problem. My next issue would be how to do that since the threads on the axle are completely rusted away. If I scrape off the rust, I think the shaft will be pretty much smooth. I'm not sure how it rusted this bad.

PB buster and a wire brush should clean that off good.

I never got around to checking the passenger side hub but for the past few days I haven't had the ABS/Traction lights come on so maybe the driver's side hub was bad after all.
On a side note, 2 days after changing the driver's side hub, it looks like my transmission is starting to slip. I can't see how anything I did would have caused it. It only appears to slip when cold and after driving about 15 minutes everything seems fine. From what I've read from other posts, it seems like some of the noises I'm hearing could be coming from the trans and not the other hub. I'm real nervous about taking it to a trans shop since I don't know enough to argue back with the mechanic and don't want to just take their word on what the problem is and then get stuck paying big bucks for a repair I didn't really need.
Scottydogs - I just noticed you also live in NJ. Do you know of any good trans shop in the central NJ area?
