Remove dog bones and brackets.
Remove upper rad hose.
Unplug fans and unbolt them from rad, 3 bolts IIRC and unclip the trans lines at the bottom and wiggle it out past the rad.
Remove lower rad hose and drain it, move it aside, unclip/bolt bolt trans cooler lines.
Remove the 2 small brackets holding the rad in, then lift and wiggle the rad out and re-install.
^^That'll do it. It's pretty simple.
you could remove the bumper cover and actual bumper if you wanted not 100% necessary but its not that hard
Why would you remove the bumper cover and bumper?
easier access to the radiator
Everything you need to touch for the radiator is on the motor side. You pull the front bumper and support off the only thing you'll run into is the AC condenser. Write up under initial question is spot on. It's easy, 20 minutes if that. Depending on where you live, you will want to be careful with the transmisison lines. I've come across ones that look brand new and other look like nuts off a Model T.. LOL Plenty of PB Blaster or Liquid Wrench and possibly boxed end wrenches to help make sure you don't round them off.
well i ran into a delay with mine,
went to put it in and realized that the connector for the overlow tank hose was busted off.
so now im stuck with my clogged one until tommorrow.
does anybody know if the buick century rads are better or the same? i can get one of those like $5 cheaper.
just curious since i have to take mine back and swap it out anyways.
I actually just upgraded mine on my 00 GT to a 98 Monte Carlo rad w/ HD cooling. Instead of the stock 5/8" core on the GP now I have a 1 3/8" core and a larger built-in trans cooler to boot. Only needed to modify 2 things and it drops right in. I took pics and whatnot as I was going and plan on writing it up at some point.
Cost of the radiator from OReillys was $135 or so.
vacuum trans line has nothing to do with the radiator
It will fit your 97. It only moves the fans back about 1/4", so it will still clear cars with headers as well from what I see. I had to buy a different lower rad hose to clear the belt/A/C compressor as the stock one has bends that put it a little closer than I'd like. I don't have the parts list here at work, so I'll update this when I get access to the info.
The rad. I got from OReillys carries a lifetime warranty, and they had to order it and got it in a day. Part Number: 432387
Make sure you take a tape measure with you when you pick it up and measure the top edge of the core to be sure they got the correct one, as there is also a 1" core available for this car. BTW the rad. is for a 1998 Monte Carlo with the 3800. Oreilly's show 3 rads avail. so be sure they send you the right one.
All, here is a link to the write-up I just created for this swap. Feel free to add USEFUL info as needed. Hope it helps.
