Thread: What is this part and which is broken?

Hi,

I apologize from the beginning because I know I don't know much but trying to figure out what the problem is before getting somebody else to look at it. I went to get my oil changed and when they were done, they said they could not move my car. When you press the brakes and attempt to move the shifter, it would be really loose and you couldn't feel the gears changing. Once in drive, it would not move at all. One of the men saw the problem and fixed it temporarily but couldn't tell me the name of the part or anything and couldn't tell me if it would cost a lot to fix. He said it wouldn't last and that the ball had fallen off? This is the piece:

What I am unsure of is the bottom gray piece broken or is the top black piece? I can't tell and don't know much. Please if anyone could tell me the name of the broken piece and which is broken, it would be a lot of help.

That's your shifter linkage it looks like the bushing is worn out

It's a 2008 GXP V8. Well, today with a lot more light, I was able to get in there and play around a little bit. It is the bushing that is messed up. The white part in the picture. It is broken on one side, therefore it will come off the small ball really easily. I called the dealership today and they said the shift linkage has two parts, a cable and the end part that connects to the transmission?? I'm pretty sure all I need is the end part that connects but not sure now if the inside white part comes out (it appears as if it might) or which part exactly he was talking about. Whichever "end" part he was talking about, he said it was $50. I tried taking out the whole cable out by but it's connected at an angle and don't want to take things off to that so I just stopped playing with it.

Hey guys I would like to let some people know that at the junkyard I found the part on a 2004 Buick Regal, and this part was exactly the same except the Black Plastic arm that that held the plastic Bushing is much better quality. This form helped me save over $200 thanks alot guys!

Interesting this came back up. Mine just went. I am getting a new bushing from bushingfix for $25. Seems like a lot less work just to repalce the bushing than the whole cable.
And boy is that cable long. I always wondered what that cable behind the headlight was. Who knew - it was for the transmission.

Yes the bushing from BushingFix will work but be careful, if installed incorrectly, the bushing can cause the arm to slip when put in park.
I almost bought one until my friend had to buy too and he got frustrated with spending $25 on a piece of plastic that broke during installation

hey guys if you are REPLACING the cable, BE CAREFUL with theE Clip that holds the 2 cords together. It is easily breakable and is missing in this photo
