Longer = Quieter. Shorter = Louder.
what i did was measure the res that was in my car, it came out to 28 inches long, flange to to the end of the outlet tube. stock outlet is 2.25 inside diameter.
i picked up a 32 inch glass pack cut the inlet tube off one side, and welded a flange on it. made it roughly 29 1/2 inches long. it cost 22, the flange cost 10, the welder got me for 20, new gasket was 6. vs a new replacement walker res for 100 or more locally.
my car already had the stock cat back replaced so all my pipes and stuff are clamped not factory welded.
if you have the stock cat back your going to need to go to a muffler shop, have the old res cut out and the glass pack welded in, unless you can weld yourself.
if your cat back is not stock, un bolt it yeah right, break the bolts from the cat to the res and drop the whole exhaust and then work on getting the res off the pipe. i used a cut off wheel and scored the outlet tube with 3 lines and just pealed the pipe back till it came off.
Scotty hope you don't mind me digging this up. Your detailed post ALMOST answered all my ?'s
Do you have a part # for the glasspack you picked up or brand? What was the inner diameter of the gp you went with, 2.25 or 2.5? Guessing 2.5 would require modification to fit?
the glass pack i got was a thrush, it cost 25 bucks. (mine was 32 inch, i cut the inlet tube off and put the flange on there to shorten it up to fit) the flange was $10. i got that at a muffler shop. (no one else carry's them) got a new gasket when i got the glass pack, for the stock cat back flange connection (8 bucks) and then bought 2 new bolts and nuts, cause the old ones always snap off.
you'll want the 2.25 inlet and outlet on the glass pack. if your cat back is the stock welded pipes, you need to cut the old res out, then have the glass pack welded in. you wont need the new flange if it gets welded in. good time to delete the U bend if your car has that.
mine was already a after market res and intermediate pipe so it was all clamps and slip ends. i was able to cut and pull it all apart.
as you can see from the pic its way easier to drop the whole exhaust off the car and then work on it if your going at this yourself. its only held up there by the 2 bolts to the cat, and a bunch of rubber hangers.
if you go to a shop they got a lift to work on.
funny buy i just dropped the whole exhaust again to install a new intermediate pipe, that glass pack is still red lol
Aha nice, I hope mine stays red rather than rusts.
Thanks for info. Yea I got a stock catback. Almost certainly just going to take it to a shop to have the res cutout and GP welded in, if I do it my car will prolly be laid up for days... First shop I called quoted $60, not too bad.
Why did you install a new intermediate pipe? And what exactly are you refering to here... the link between res/gp and the cross pipe? Did you upgrade the inner diameter or ... ?? Do you think I should have the shop replaced this while theyre at it? My car is an '01 with 160k, it may have to be replaced anyways idk.
And this thread should be stickied or linked to in the exhaust sticky, very helpful for deciding on glasspack vs stock res.
thats the pipe in the middle of the res and muffler. most gp's have a Y pipe with 2 mufflers, its still just hung by hangers.
the old one had 3 holes welded shut,( large holes) and one hanger ripped off so there was that clamp on style hanger you see in the pic. it was leaking and very thin, i found a deal on amazon for 37 shipped for the pipe, a deal i could not pass up. local they run 70 ish.
was that 60 for everything? glass pack installed? if so thats not a bad deal really. if your car has that U bend in the pipe have them cut that out too..
Y-pipe... thats the name. I don't think mine will be that bad, I believe this is the car's 4rth or 5th salty winter. Yea $60 if I bring in the GP ($24 on amazon) and have them install it. I do still have the U-bend but got a DP ready to install as well so that'll be taken care of.
One more silly question, what size are the bolts between DP and cat-back flange? Mine are literally rusted twigs, I have no reference. Are the manifold-dp bolts the same ones?
ive yet to deal with the DP never touched those bolts. the other two just get a pair of bolts 1 1/2 inches long a 1/4 inch wide threads and a fat washer for both sides.
got that at the hardware store for like 2 bucks or less.
thinking out loud, you should maybe get the dp installed at the same time. this way they can weld it all up, or they will need to install a flange on the glass pack so it fits like stock.
i kinda like the idea of having the bolt up flanges myself so the cat back can be dropped easily if need be.
Yea I'd rather it all be flanged and bolted. Thinking I'm gonna install the DP myself to my stock cat-back with it's completely destroyed resonator then take it to the shop with a GP in hand.
Did you reinstall the heat shield aka piece of sheet metal above the glasspack? My res has a piece of sheet metal tacked on to separate it from the floor panels. Just wanna avoid cooking the hell out of the floor, cause its in nearly perfect shape atm, almost zero rust amazingly.
mine never had one, the glass pack is way thinner then the res i had. it fits in the tunnel dead center of the car. i dont notice any heat from it.
that sounds like a good idea, have them weld a flange on the end of the Glass Pack then weld the other side pipe to pipe and call it a day.
Gonna call around anyways and see what they'll charge me for DP install. THe more I think about it, the more I second guess wanting to lay on the freezing cold garage floor and fight with 13 years of rust...ahah. Might be worth another $40 to have it done on a lift and save myself the swearing.
Anyways, thanks for the info, appreciate it.
no problem. i know what its like to hear all that leaking, it sucks.
its so nice now that the whole cat back is all new parts. its so silent now. all i hear is blower whine.
YEa its driving me CRAZY. There's about a 10" section on top of the res that's completely rusted and gone. I think all this salt on the roads accelerated its downfall. Between the drone and interior trim rattling, makes me wanna put it in a ditch lol.
I'm jealous....and excited to get mine fixed.
Glad I dont have to mess with that stuff.
The Thrush glasspack is the perfect size for a replacement. I've many people over the years to get one... Cant beat it for the price.
