Thread: Intake Fan?

When using a HAI, would there be any advantage to installing a fan either behind the headlight or in the fender area, wired either into the radiator fans or just on when running? Thought it might help bring in some air, especially with city driving. Any thoughts?

air moves through that area by itself. a fan would be a restriction.

I was thinking a large diameter, low-profile fan might help increase airflow at low speeds without being too much of a restriction. Surely the amount of air pulled in would more than make up for the space of the fan?

If you want to keep things cooler then I would get a different thermostat and a tune to have the fans come on sooner. Or a more efficient radiator. Keeping the air warm instead of hot really won't make that much of a difference. Now a cowl hood and fan may work to keep the underhood temps down, but seeing as how these motors run hot by design it's really not worth the effort IMHO.

Other than what I'm guessing was a fluke just after installing the HAI, the temp stays at 185 max. I just thought a fan in the fender area might serve to add some of the benefits of a CAI without the full setup, as it would blow directly on my air filter. Just a thought.

At Idle and low speeds maybe. Once you hit 35-40mph temps in that area are ambient by design. After you reach those speeds the fan is just in the way. I dont think it would disrupt air flow completely, since thats not the only area that pulls fresh air.
Also a high powered fan might cause alternator strain. Not worth it IMO, Save the $50 it costs to build and save for an intercooler.
