    Without know more about the conditions at the time of the stalling I’d have to go with the CPS (crank position sensor) failing. If your tach gauge freaks out, or maybe an abs light, and generally no associated CEL or code then it probably is the CPS.

    Information like any codes, what speed is the car going, cruising or during acceleration, coolant warm or cold, mileage on your car, any mods you have done are often key to figuring this stuff out.

    Also, have you taken a trip lately? And how long is recently, a week…two? I’m thinking it might be simply water in your gas tank. Did it rain a lot in Indiana lately, did you fill up at a different gas station than usual?

    It's been happening for a while, ebven in the dry Indiana summer. I fill up at several different gas stations. Usually Shell stations as they seem to have great gasoloine. I don't have any mods on the car, it has about 225k--all original. It will happen even at idle, but usually when driving around or accelerating, no speed inpaticular.

    I took it to Auto Zone last night and didn't get any codes. So you're saying is a CPL not going to give a code? My tach gauge freaks out a lot. Usually when stalling out, but sometmes it will stay running. At times, it will freak out, the car will sputter as if it is going to stall, then the tach will go down to 0 and the car will stay running will the tach remains inactive? Lastly, is the crank position sensor different from the cam position sensor, because I have replaced that already.

    Every thing you have describe points right to the crank position sensor failing. They are a PITA to trouble shoot because, yes, they don’t throw a direct code. It is because when it fails the PCM thinks the car is off, hence why it “stalls”. As far as a “cam position sensor”, I don’t know what you’re talking about there.

    Just for future reference it is the little things that ppl don’t mention, in your case the tach indication that can really help us help you. I personally have been spared from any CPS failures, but they do fail often on GPs especially older ones. I do know they are far from easy to change, but ppl do all the time so maybe someone can chime in and point you in the right direction.

    Thanks for the help. The cam position sensor is located behind the water pump pulley on the side of the block. I do know the crank position sensor is located near the harmonic balancer and could be a challenge. I think you have to take the tire off, the fender well out, and so on...at least I have a good idea of what it is. I also talked to a gearhead at work. He seems to think it is a crank position sensor, too. I guess I know what I'll be doing on Christmas vacation......
