Well, it seems like the power window problems have found their way to another GP owner.

I have a 1998 Grand Prix GT coupe. The driver side window seems to be causing me problems. Sometimes it will go up and down, sometimes it wont move at all. It will never work for more than one press of the button it seems.

I thought it might have been the switch causing the funny behaviour, but i replaced it with a brand new one and still have the same problem. My regulator wires are all there so i suspected the motor to be dead, but would a dead motor ever move?

Any ideas at all? Its getting super annoying now when i have to open my door to talk to people or clean out the garage to keep the open window from the rain when it wont go back up.

    Thanks in advance,
    -Ryan

The motors will sometime get dead spots in them where they will hang up on every now and then. Usually you can bang on the door and they kinda get kick started. I had a Jeep like that once that would get stuck down from time to time. I've also replaced several for customers with the same problems. Not really a vehicle specific problem, I've seen all sorts of them on just about everything.

Might have to throw some new grease on the tracks. If it's never been done, the old grease is probably worn out and not on the moving parts anymore. I am having the same problem with my 97 GT. Just haven't gotten around to fixing it yet.

I've seen one and heard that it's common for a motor going bad to stop working while being used....... It's like they have an automatic reset... If something is going wrong they will stop working momentaraly but minutes later will work again.

We just changed the whole regulator/motor assembly and the problem was solved.

usually that is the thermal overload kicking in, a bad connection can cause that as well as a bind, replacing everything would fix that, but may be overkill

Probably your switch. I had the same issues and that was my problem.

A good maintence tip..... About every 6 months or so when your car is dirty. Crack your windows down, with a can of WD40, shove the tip in the tracks (so WD40 doesn't get on the glass or in the car) and spray them down. Roll up the window a couple times and spray again. It will clean out the tracks and help lubricate them a little bit. You could use silcone spray but i find it too messy honestly. Doing this on a car thats never been done to before it will drastically improve window roll down and up times. The WD40 will of course leak out the drain holes on the door and down the rocker moldings. This is why I recommend doing it when the car is dirty. You should try it some time, probably the reason i've had very little if any power window problems on my cars.

BTW, it does work. I had my drivers door panel off awhile back, my tracks were as clean as a wistle and yes the silicone was still there so the WD40 didn't wash it away. I went ahead and reapplied some silicone since the best time to do it is with the door panel off the car.

Thanks for the tip. I'll have to do that. I'm sure the guy that had my GT before me never did it and the windows are moving kinda slow.

Great advice!! I have done this for some time because I have replaced 2 window regs in my '99.

The two motors in each reg had bad spots on the motor com. If the current gets too high the window motor controller thinks it is at the end of travel and turns it off. Running it if bad may also dammage the switch since it is drawing excessive current... I had to replace one. That is why the WD40 is great PM.
