Today I purchased and installed a "deflector" for the passenger side of my 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix under the plastic cowl at the bottom of the windshield. No problems there, but..

I knew my wiper transmission was malfunctioning because my wipers stuck "up" as is common for this vehicle. After I installed the deflector I checked out the wiper motor assembly/transmission. It is much more intuitively designed and easily accessed than I thought.

I watched the transmission work on all intervals, speeds, and even "mist" mode. The pin would not release in any case. So, I removed the torx screw securing the whole assembly to the motor and soaked it in WD-40 and then applied some heavy grease.

After I reattached the assembly to the motor it began to operate normally! Only problem is, I didn't note the position of the transmission at "home" position i.e. when the wipers are set to "off". If someone could provide me with degrees or even an "eyeball" approximation of which way the assembly faces in home position it would make my day!

    Thanks Guys

ive never seen the wiper trans in a grand prix, but don't the wiper motor just have a L bracket bolted onto it and the trans arm gets snapped onto it?

that's the way most of my cars that i have replaced the wiper motor or trans worked.

if so hook it all up, and just turn the switch to off, and put on the wiper arms, in the down position, then run the wipers and see what happens. that's all i did on the last gm car i worked on. you may need to adjust them a little bit as to how far the blades are going to the driver side edge of the windshield, it may go past the glass. just remove the arm and turn it 2 or 3 splines the opposite way of the problem till your happy.

Take your wiper arms off, turn the wipers off and let them park. Then install the wiper arms on the studs where they should be on the rests. Done.

I got the whole wiper assym from www.moradpartscomany.com for 45.00 shipped last year. It solved my wiper problems. I got tired of bending that tab back. Once it gets weak you'll keep fighting it and the dealership thinks that wiper motor plate is worth 160bux +!

I'm having this issue with my '97. I took it all apart and the tab appears to be in the correct spot as that little switch type thing underneath everything clicks on the tab with every revolution but they aren't returning home. Is the wiper motor supposed to run in reverse in order for that mechanical device to engage? If the motor were to run in reverse that latch would catch and engage the mechanism. Is that how it is designed to function?
