So the other day drove my car to a restaurant and when we came out to leave i couldn't get it out of park... the shifter button on the knob wouldn't push in. Since i had heard about this problem before with gps i just used the shift lock release button the next couple times i had to drive it. My key hasnt gotten stuck like i have seen on here as an associated problem.

Checked my BTSI fuse......Checked to make sure i had brake lights....both were fine.

So i did what any broke ass college kid would do and took the center counsole apart and rubber banded the shift lock release lever all the way open so i don't have to push the button every time.

The only problem is now my shifter could potentially be bumped into reverse or park going highway speed because i basically took away that safety feature!

Any ideas what could be wrong and how to fix it for real with something other than a rubber band?

Did you check at the soleniod for power! How about listening for a clicking from it!

Nab a picture of it! I've seen on my own car where teh white piece that would be pushed from above to release it can jamb up!
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

Havent checked for a clicking. I do know that the while plastic piece doesn't move when i push down the brake. It moves easily with the shift lock release which i have rubber banded engaged

im pretty sure i don't need to push the button and can just push it forward when driving. I put the parking brake on while in drive and could just push it on forward into reverse then park with no button....

    scary!

You still have to squeeze the release to shift it into Reverse or park. At least that's how mine is and I've had it rigged for 2 years now.

So as long as you can control the urge to throw it into reverse or park u should be good
