Last year I had turned off the highway to look at a piece of property that had dirt roads to the house; when I got back on the highway, my ABS light came on and my Trac off light came on. When I go to push the Trac button, it won't push. I'm wondering what causes those two lights to come on? Does it mean I need brakes and then it will fix both problems? Are they related issues perhaps?

I agree with Rick, it is usually the wheel hub. When you replace it or have it replaced make sure to ask for a Timken. Auto Zone has them for about $135. Do not get anything from China like Dyna Pak, it will not last and has a short warranty....not worth the price or trouble.

Does the same thing cause the ABS light to stay on? They happened at the same time

You bet. Both systems share the same sensor.

100% Wheel Hub...I drove around with those lights on for a while before changing them, its a very common problem. You may have days when it will go off, but if it comes back on, you need a new hub for sure.
Have you noticed a sound coming from one up front? and does it dissapear when you take a right or left turn? If so, if the sound dissapears when....(Turning right = bad right hub) (Turning left = Bad left hub)
Theres a really good write up on here that I used to change mine, but heres another one that Ive used. Its can be an easy job, or a bi*ch to do, depending on how seized your bolts are.

Here's that good write up... with all the torque specks and what-not. I have some posts in there, and a pic of how bad my hub was.

Not to hijack but I have a question, my cars traction light and ABS light come on and stay on only during a cold start, after the car warms up I shut the car off and restart they go away. Also I have no noise from the front.

One of my GPs did the same thing. This is the same problem. Yeah, sometimes you will not hear a noise because the bearing is good but the sensor is failing.

its not necessarily the wheel hub... mmy car had the same problem and replaced the hubs. they were still on so i got an abs scan... turns out it was a split wire in the left wheel speed censor leading towards i dont know what.

so my advice is get an abs scan

Good point. And on the flip side, on another of my GPs the hub bearing was howling but never set off the trac light or abs light.

TYSM Colossus. I'll definitely check it out. Not sure I wanna tackle the repair myself though. And as far as noises? There has been a "whine" coming from the left front since I bought it 6 years ago, nobody could diagnose it though, so it's just gotten progressively worse, the more I drive it, the louder it whines. Nevertheless, I definitely wanna get certain things before I list it for sale, as well as a total detail, including the carpets and possibly the headliner replaced (it's falling)

the split wire thing happened to me to. its as common as a bad wheel hub. apparently it has to do with the piss poor routing of the original wiring. it bends soo much, then breaks.

check your wires first. you may be able to fix it yourself, for near free.

I think the only way to go is to scan the code for the issue
