The moaning used to not be that bad bit now it seems like the moaning is really loud. Any ideas on what might be wrong/is it normal or how to quiet it down??? Thanks

I am going to guess and say power steering pump is going.. mine makes that sound (not as loud) occasionaly when I make turns around 90*. I changed my power steering fluid and it still makes the sound.

I would guess the pump is going, but do yourself a favor and check to make sure you have fluid in it

Low fluid or a bad pump..
Just FYI, if you buy an aftermarket pump, it'll whine even as soon as you put it on..

First step, check the fluid. Most of the time it groans, you're out of fluid. If you are out of fluid, then the next step is, finding the leak. You may want to use some engine degreaser and clean things up so you don't go chasing what you think are leaks when in reality it's just old crud.

I've had it be the high pressure hose on two different cars and then on another car the steering rack.

Not sure, how/why, but I would suspect there might have been an air pocket in the power steering system. I know when you have a empty system and you first fill it up, it takes a while to work out.

Not sure the relation between a tranny service and PS issue...

I think the PS resevoir and pump sit behind the tranny and might have to be removed.Regardless I never had any PS whine issues before hand so he had to do something in order for it to act up.

Edit:you were right I just remembered he said i had air in the system

AH! That makes sense. I keep forgetting the placement of the PS pump (one part of the design I am not a fan of). But I can see that now, service the trans may require removing the PS pump.

Possibly.. Throw a piece of cardboard under the car when you park it at night and look for anything in the morning.. Location could help you dial I'm where it's coming from.
My gt had a ps leak.. Both the return line, and the rack itself leaked.

You dont have to pull the pump to get the trans off, you just unclip the lines from subframe, unless they are retarded and removed the lines.

I have not had to trace down PS leaks on the 3800 (and I am still new to the 3800). But on two 3100 Grand Ams, the high pressure line had a pin hole leak. It was found by just following the lines and found an area heavy coated in fluid and crud. With the car running, I had someone rocking the wheels left to right. On these cars, a piece of plastic wire loom is put over the high pressure line by the factory. I began to remove it and it was at that point the leak was found instantly during a wheel movement (fluid sprayed right out).

My experience with power steering racks is to look at the ends of the rack. Usually one end has a piece that looks like it's a plug pressed in to fit. Fluid will seap out of it when it's rusty enough. Again, having someone rock the wheels left to right, you will see fluid move out of it. Eventually, that plug will pop itself out and you'll then be spraying fluid.
