I'm getting bits and pieces of info from different sources on here. So I have a question: the fuel gauge I have is faulty. It almost always reads full. No big deal, but I finally want it fixed. Now I pulled a fuel pump yesterday for a few bucks out of a low mileage 3800 grand prix, so it should be the same as mine. But untill close examination, it isn't. The one I pulled has the three fuel lines, which is the same, but only one top connecting unit. The one I have in my car, along with Others Ive seen in some threads have two top wire connecters. I don't get it. So my next thought is using the fuel LEVEL sender unit attached to the pump and exchange it with the one on my pump, rather than exchanging the whole pump unit. It looks easy, and the donor is already off of the pump. Real simple. Is this what some of you guys have done?

Also, I remember hearing somewhere that you can go to a gm dealer and get a new one (clip with sensor, float, and two wire feeds). I think that getting a new one would be better. Isn't it said somewhere that this piece is expensive per grand prix, but is way cheaper, and identically the same, for like a blazer? Or something....? I dunno. I appreciate the help guys!

Yes you can just change the senders. Yes you can get a new sender from gm , look online I am sure you can find one cheaper than from gm.

Excellent. I will keep updated when I do this project soon with my buddy. The only things I am worried about it securing the pump back into place so it doesn't leak. When I take it out the original, I am worried that it will be corroded and that stupid metal ring that locks it into place is going to be really tough. I am sure I am going to have to get another new one. Any pointers would be helpful!

I have the sensor from a fuel pump that was not the same as the one in my car. (I was just going to switch the fuel pump, but that is a not go now). I would have done it already but thinking I might wait until spring when my other car gets out so I will have another ride if necessary. The thing I am MOST concerned about is taking the current fuel pump unit out and installing it back in, without any leaks. I do not like the seal on top and am worried I won't set it right. FYI, you can get a brand new sensor/wire/jazz on eBay for 19 bucks shipped. (Probably better than the salvaged unit I have).

97-2000 has a different pump IIRC. I have never had a pump not seal when I put it back in.

The metal ring on top and removing it and reinstalling it is what I am nervous about. It is always corroded there.
