I have a 98 gtp that just has the service engine soon light on. I had it scanned and the print out said either the thermostat or the engine coolant temperature sensor is defective since one of them are not taking the correct temp. reading of the coolant. I noticed my temperature gauge varying back and forth while I was driving the other day. Would that push me to believe that the thermostat or ECT sensor is shot?

replace the thermostat first. It's easy to do and costs less than 10.00 if the problem is still not gone its the other.

Thanks, I replaced the thermostat and still have the problem. Do you know where the ECT is? I know there is two of them but don't know which one is the main sensor and where it is.

look under the thermostat housing on the lower intake manifold. the other is just a coolant level sensor on the radiator.
