Was getting an oil change today and the mechanics suggested both my front bearings were going bad. I would like for somebody here to educate me on how to tell for myself if they are bad before I spend close to $1000 (as quoted by them) for replacement. Also, if it turns out my bearings are bad, where I can shop and get service that is wallet friendly. I'm in San Diego. Thanks a bunch.

i took my car to a shop after doing my front struts for an alignment. they told me both my front bearings were bad and wanted nearly $700. i heard absolutely no noise, no warning lights, everything was great. i took it to a more trusted shop (that doesnt do alignments) for a 2nd opinion and sure enough they said the exact same thing. both wheels have just a little bit of "play" in them. that shop only wanted $500. i am in nebraska though, a bit different then CA

you can jack up the car off of the ground with the wheels pointed straight ahead. With the wheels locked, grab each tire one at a time at the 9 o'clock and the 3 o'clock position. push with one hand and pull with the other. go back and forth. If there is no play, they should be good. If they have play or move more than just a small touch, they are bad..........that is how I do it anyway....Sorry I dont know of any shops in your area.....Sorry............this was for checking ball joints, not the wheel bearings.....
