it is a GTP 3.4 in question - seems the power steering pump is more noisy than other cars I have seen (not other GP's)

Fluid seems topped and fairly clean.

So, when a pump goes bad, does it typically just get more noisy?
Are they particularly noisy on this engine?

As far as how the PS works on my car, it does alright but not as easy as it seems it should be.

    Advice?

I had the same symptoms on my '97 and assumed the pump was going out. Tank was full and the fluid looked okay. I pumped all the fluid out and replaced it with new and no more noisy pump.

I would suggest the same thing as alky. On my wife's 3.1 malibu, the pump was noisy. So I sucked out the fluid and put new in. Let it mix for a couple days, and did it again. Repeated this till the fluid was all new, and never had an issue since. And used less than a quart of fluid.

Appreciate that, I am gonna have to change it I guess.
If it is not a big hassle, I might disconnect a power steering line at the cooler and let it drain thru there. I guess the worst that will happen is it won't help.
I know how to bleed it and all so let me try that, thanks again and I shall update when done.

    EDIT -
So I used a turkey baster to remove the PS fluid, started engine, got some more in the reservoir, removed, filled it up, bled the system, and then did the extraction again.
The pump can still be heard when I am turning the wheel but otherwise it seemed to have quieted down.
And yeah, the old fluid was worse than I originally thought, it was yellow and the new fluid was clear.
