I haven't had the issue on my GP, but my old 98 Chrysler Sebring had a fluid leak like that in their Donnelly mirrors. 9 times out of 10 it stays contained inside the housing but it does contain Mercury, so open it at your own risk. Eventually it'll dry and obstruct vision in the mirror itself.

If your car already has the provisions for the compass and everything, then it's up to what you want to spend really. Auto dimming is nice but not a huge deal to me. Also know that OnStar on cars that age are completely obsolete and won't work as is.
