The recall doesn't affect the actual ignition cylinder on our vehicles, it just involves an insert for the key.
To me it sounds like it could be the starter going bad. It may be a pain to do (since it's an intermittent issue), but pop the hood and hold your head out the window when you start the vehicle until the issue occurs again. When it happens, if you hear a click from the engine bay and the engine doesn't turn over, it's likely a bad starter. If you don't hear a click then the issue is closer to the power source (either ignition or connection related). Normally if you have a bad ground relating to the starting system (or even a bad battery), your gauges and such will cut out while the key is turned.
