    2006 grand prix base.

I just replaced my alternator because of how overcharged it was. In idle it was nearly 15.4 battery volts. So i replaced it and now all of a sudden when i start the car, it slowly starts up. I don't get it. Both the battery and belt is a year old.

    Tune up?

Are you aware that 04+ charging systems will vary between 15.5V-12.5V? If your system is not charging properly it could be due to the PCM or wiring may be to blame. If you put in a new alternator then it sounds like the problem is elsewhere.

If you unplugged the battery to replace the alt, as you should have, the ecu needs to relearn so things will be a little different for awhile.

What is the voltage at start up? If 15.4v is after a few minutes or with no load, that is a bit high. Sounds like you may have killed the battery.

If my car shows 15.2 volts it will throw a charge system failure message. The GXP's on the other hand do run with a little higher voltage from what has been pointed out on this very forum.

While driving if I monitor my voltage it usually runs 14.9 at the highest.

My 01 ranges from 15ish all the way down to 13 flat depending on the day. Usually in the summer it hits 14 for a couple minutes and then settles down to 13 flat after half an hour of runtime or so. In the winter on really cold days it hits 15+ and rarely drops below 14.
