Re: What did you do to your Car today? Vol 2.0
id clean it up with brake cleaner, then grease and work it in and out, then more grease, repeat till it slides smoothly.
watch you dont slice your fingers or hand up, that green ring on the column where the upper part of the shaft bolts back is sharp as fvck.

Turn the radio up, problem solved
Re: What did you do to your Car today? Vol 2.0
One more problem, you feel the clunk in the steering wheel. Add a box to make a vibrating massaging steering wheel, then you can't feel it lol
Dorman makes one for $92.99. Not sold at advance auto parts... So oriellys or autozone
Re: What did you do to your Car today? Vol 2.0
make sure the tie rods are good still, then check the ball joints.
Re: What did you do to your Car today? Vol 2.0
Checked all that last week. Ball joints are just starting to get play, only felt with a pry bar. Not by tugging on the wheel. You only feel it when accelerating really. Not when turning.
I'll work at it and see if I can get it to free up a bit.
Re: What did you do to your Car today? Vol 2.0
if i stood outside the car door one hand on the front wheel and then rocked the steering wheel back and fourth i used to feel a clunk, new rack fixed that. and all the torque steer too. front end was all over the place when i got on it. found the rack to have internal slop.

Re: What did you do to your Car today? Vol 2.0
It's an intermediate shaft.. Bonnevilles and Chevy pickups had an issue with them. Basically any GM had an issue.
Re: What did you do to your Car today? Vol 2.0
mine dont look like that, its more flat with a groove on each side the other side is its negative, aka male/female. slide together.
yours looks like it needs to be replaced.
Re: What did you do to your Car today? Vol 2.0
Probably should be. Got it apart, cleaned everything up and without grease it moves better. I'll grease it and see
My class got cancelled because the entrance to the shop is blocked because of the president coming. I'm at home a mile from it and I'm hearing helicopters lol. There were snipers on the roof of my school too. Crazy.
Re: What did you do to your Car today? Vol 2.0
I've never had one apart, but it looks like driveshaft spline. Same with driveshafts, they bottom out, then with a good pull, the two halves will pop apart. When those splines get dry, they are a ***** to move and separate.

Re: What did you do to your Car today? Vol 2.0
I got it all together and took it for a drive. The very first stop I made it made a little bit of noise on take off, but after that it was completely quiet. So we'll see.

Just so you know GM has a revised ISS. Its a sealed unit. They used to offer a grease kit but discontinued it.
If you do ever need to replace the ISS, do NOT get the Dorman brand one unless you wanna keep doing the job over and over.

Re: What did you do to your Car today? Vol 2.0
Thanks, noted. Well see how my fix holds up. I did the best grease job one can do lol.
Also fixing my mom's caravan, crazy electrical problems on it. Radio, windows, and blower were spazzing out going on and off uncontrollably. Ended up finding some fuzzy corrosion on a wiring harness under the battery. Took the battery and tray out to find the battery leaking and it corroded a harness pretty bad. Time to solder, heatshrink, and get a new battery. It's seven years old but still works OK.

Re: What did you do to your Car today? Vol 2.0
My sisters bonneville had already had the steering shaft replaced by the dealer several years before her buying it and even the replacement part started to clunk.
I removed it and greased everything. I even spent the time to shove grease in all of the u-joint spots too. Took a while to get the grease to move around in them but it worked like a charm. I don't care if I have to do once a year, it's 20 min of my time and some grease compared to actually having to spend money LOL.
Re: What did you do to your Car today? Vol 2.0
Haha yeah it isn't hard to replace. I even used a scotchbrite pad by hand to clean up the plastic/nylon surface since it didnt fit very well, either the nylon expanded or grease hardened on it. It slid much better after that, and with grease, much better. It should last, I did much more than just put some grease on it with it still in the car like some may try.
Re: What did you do to your Car today? Vol 2.0
A smart man would drill, tap and install a zerk. 20 mins can become 1 min. :th_peaceout:

This is the write up I was looking for. Supposedly there are still some grease kits available online.
