Feel under the plastic under the steering wheel, there is a small button there. Press that button and the key should come out.

Probably easier if the steering is wheel is in the up position. Both our 02 and 03 GP's did this.

replace ign? Not sure. Didn't care to fix mine before I sold it. You could always take the plastic off and zip tie the button so its pressed all of the time, but then the key can come out at anytime........

Not to ask dumb questions, but does your electrical system have enough charge? I've noticed that this can happen if the battery runs too low. Jumping/recharging the system will allow for enough power to retrieve your key.

I did what Joe is talking about. My key can be removed at any time. I kind of like it. keep car running and take the keys out, grab the mail & jump back in good to go!

99% of the time a wire is broke off the plug to the shiftier in the console.

My 01 is having this issue too as well as the shifter not unlocking. I repaired it after a head on collision by the PO could this have cause it and are the two issues related? I can use the manual unlock for the shifter and it will shift in an out of park fine until I shut the key off and start the car again, then it resets the lock and I have to override it.

open the console up, look for loose wire to the plug thats on the front of the shiftier. or damaged looking wires to that plug.
