RockAuto has several to choose from. I don't know which one is a good one, but it looks like it's not more than $100 for a decent one.

they all are, its your wallet that tells you what one you can afford. new vs rebuilt.

if you have the time to wait for it to be shipped, you could look up your local starter and alternator re builders. they are cheaper then a parts store rebuilt starter or alt, and they warranty it. sometimes they have one that already rebuilt, you just give them your old one and take the already re built one.

oh, if they have to re build your old one, it only takes a hour or two, unless they are busy.

Did you inspect the existing starter to see if this is the trouble? There are other things it could also be, like something dangling loose and hitting a belt or fan when you turn.

I inspected it. It's not a fan. And it feels from the flywheel. I was able to move the starter gear with a screw driver.
I pretty much believe it is the starter even tho it works perfectly fine.
The noise it makes is really embarrassing.

Rebuilders around me charge 100 for labor plus parts.

im sure you could find one cheaper. that up there for a re built starter.

and take yours out and bench test it, all you need is jumper cables and your battery.

Sounds like thats probably the noise then. I went to a parts store as soon as I figured out what it was. It attracts a LOT of attention, as you said.

pretty sure with the inspection cover off you can see if the starter gear is hanging up on the flex plate. sometimes its the bearing. sometimes its the solenoid. the solenoid is replaceable for like 20 bucks, and is easy to change.

and yes a hung starter gear will make a wicked ass whining metallic sound.

Hey Scotty, the situation I encountered and that we're thinking is Rave's trouble isn't that the starter hangs up, but that the gear is not being retained when the starter is at rest. So when he turns, the gear slides over on the shaft and "tink!... ta-tink, tatinkkkkkkkk k kk" the gear bounces back and forth, off the spinning flexplate teeth. Wasn't sure if we was clear on that. Its a wierd problem, at least it was for me because I hail from the rear drive camp. Other than this annoying noise, my starter still worked fine!

damn, never had that one happen to me yet. in that case if the gear is loose i could see that happen. it should be under a spring load when you try to pop it out with a screw driver, it should snap back in and hold tight.

Exact-a-mundo. It can probably be pried out with a screwdriver but should be under spring pressure and snap back. I could tilt my old starter side to side and rattle the gear on the shaft. I initially diagnosed it by jacking up one side of the idling car until it made the noise. Still couldn't tell where the noise was exactly, but I took a video and it only was heard on the left channel so that got me thinking...

Take the car to Raleigh and sell it to a Nascar fan. A real Nascar fans will take 3 lefts to avoid a right.

Seriously if the problem persists it could be a wheel hub assembly. Turning to the right places more weight on the left side causing something to deflect. You'd never find that out by jacking up the car because you take the weight off of it. See if there's any play. It could also be a bad axle...check the boots to make sure one is not all torn up. The axle noise would appear during very sharp turns.

Probably, but man it would take a lot of digging to find it. The drive its stored on has not been working every time. It wouldn't help you much anyway. And it COULD still be something else. As I said, I was able to tilt the car with a jack while idling, enough to get the noise to happen.

Yes it was the starter. The gear would pop out on right turns because the return spring was not holding it where it should be.
