My sons '04 GT is having an issue. ABS and TC go off after hitting the brakes a time or two. This leads me to believe we have a bad hub. So I go to the local Buick dealer to ask them what they would charge to just read the code so I can know which hub is causing the issue. Literally a two or three minute job. They tell me $75. I say come on man really. All I want is the code dude. He restates $75. Is there any other shops that can reac the C Codes other than the dealers? No way I am paying that for just a code read.

    This ^

Autozone, Advanced, and O'reilly's have started to read ABS codes as a part of their free engine light checks.

being a 04 the code may come up at auto zone, some newer cars abs code come up on the scanner.

most shops will charge to scan the car for you, if they do the work, they scan it so they can hunt it down, its part of the cost of the job.

and there are abs code readers on sale on line for pretty cheap to under 100 iirc.

then there is all the free checks, like jacking each wheel up lugs tight, then grab the top of the tire and push and pull the tire firmly, you are looking for it to have play, you can watch the rotor at the caliper for movement as well. rotor will move, caliper does not when the hub bearing is shot.

if good it will have no play at all.

also check the wires along the lca's for damage, clean and grease the hub plugs.

Well I went to autozone and their scanner didnt bring up a code for me, so that makes me wonder, would a shop that charges to scan bring a code up?

if the abs light is on they can get the code for you. they pay thousands a year for updates so they can scan new to old cars. this is why they charge.

my friends shop has 3 and 6 thousand dollar scanners. they work well. but as a friend i met him after hours and my abs and airbag were scanned for free. good to have friends.

Maybe try a few auto stores different scanners before you pay.

I don't expect someone to read the code for free. But paying an hours labor for two minutes is absurd. $40 in my opinion would be reasonable. I have a scanner but it doesn't read C codes. And I know that auto stores do not have readers that read them either. Just wondering if shops like Pep Boys and the like that actually repair cars have the scanners to do it, at a reasonable price. And I do not believe that the hub is mechanically is bad. The speed sensor in one of the hubs is bad I am sure. But I will check the wiring first. Do these cars have a specific area that is especially prone to wiring damage?

Yep didn't read your entire post. Since I am going to be doing the front brakes once the parts arrive I will have a good look at the wiring. I think I read on this forum somewhere that more often than not the issue is wiring and not the hub. But I cannot locate that thread again to confirm this. Does anyone know the test procedure for the sensor? I think I have to rotate the hub and check the ohms. But not sure the ohms I should be seeing

check for play in the hubs, jack each wheel up lugs tight, and push and pull the top of the tire, if it moves the hub is bad. bad hub = abs light. the sensor cant read right if the hub has play.

the wires run along the bottom of the lower control arm, they get torn up sometimes. easy to see damage.
