Went to change the serpentine belt on my sons '04 GT today. Bought an AC Delco 6K905. Removed the old belt and could not get the new one on. Tried and tried but it will not go on. I measured it up against the old belt and if there is any difference there is like an eighth of an inch. The new belt is slightly shorter than the old one. Putting the old belt back on was a PITA also. So what belt should I get? Or is there a technique that I am missing? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

Pull harder.
The old belts stretch over time making them easy to install...putting a new belt on tends to be a PITA, especially on a stock pullied supercharged car. Try a little WD40 or something, or get an actual belt tool. Those help a ton moving the tensioner all the way down...I also put the belt on the water pump pulley, last...if that helps.

Take a 15mm socket to the Water pump tensioner pulley. Use your big kid muscles and it'll go on.

I just changed mine the other day. I'm not sure I would have gotten it if my father hadn't been around to help out. Have your son hold the tensioner so you can work the belt on with both hands.

This ^^ You'll probably have to fully compress the spring but it will go on.

I had a 2 foot pry bar under the alternator with my son pushing the tensioner down. I had a 15mm on the bolt pushing some more. Seems that belt wasn't going on there. Never in my life have I had such an issue with a belt. But if the AC Delco 6K905 is the correct belt I will try again. I think I am going to pick up a tensioner tool. Maybe that will give more leverage. Here is a picture of Matt and I after Matt got inked on his 18th birthday yesterday

I think the technique was off. Lemme give you a quick how BillBoost would do it.
1. Watch the guy struggle with it and kinda shake your head and giggle.
2. Ask if he'd like a hand
3. Take the belt and lay it out in the sun. New belts have bends and let's go ahead and warm it up to make it easier to work with.
4. Put the belt on the crank pulley, AC pulley, then the other end over the WP, down to the ps pump and finish things up by going over the alt.
5. With my left hand I lift the belt off the water pump pulley toward the tensioner.
6. Sneak the socket in under the belt and onto the tensioner pulley bolt.
7. With ratchet or belt tool end down and to the front of the vehicle.. lift up to release tension and slip the belt on.
8. Now here's the key.. your belt isn't going on. At this point with all these things going on.. your socket is holding the belt. Reach your hand around and find the pulley that the belt isn't properly seated on and you can then slide the belt onto the tensioner pulley.
If that doesn't work and you happen to be localish to one of the NJ guys here.. One of them would likely stop over.. If it's Scottydoggs..lol you'll be quite impressed that a guy his size can toss that belt on like butter.

Came back to this today. Several weeks ago I bought a tensioner tool at Harbor Freight. Swapped the belt out in two minutes. Nice to have the right tool for the job

Lol could just use a wrench or I believe 15mm socket and still have it swapped quick

I literally just changed out both S/C belt and Accessory belt in under 30 minutes.....which included the removing and putting back in place of battery, coolant res., and fuse box...Fvckers were squealing bad, also had to tighten an idler or two....probably will replace tensioners soon...gotta $50 coupon code to blow at advanceauto...s/c was easier because of stock belt size on 3.6 pulley however....
