If your oil light came on and you really had low enough pressure to kick it your crank is likely trash and replacing the oil pump would not help.

If there was no knocking when the light kicked then it's possible that it's just your sensor is bad.

This may be a dumb question but you checked your oil level...right?

Yeah Iv'e checke oil level and it's perfect, and my engine isn't knocking or pinging, but you can hear the valves chattering from being starved of oil so im not sure whats up.

I'd check the oil pressure with a tester, just have to pull the oil pressure switch. Of course the only options are the engine is junk because something broke, or maybe something in the oil pump failed and it's savable. Or just the switch is bad lol.

The pump is in the timing cover. If the oil pressure is low, I'd pull the timing cover and oil filter adapter just to check. The oil filter adapter has the oil pressure regulator in it I believe. That could be a problem as well, and it's easier to remove.

You should change out the oil pressure switch anyway as they can get dirty and clogged up.

On a side note my impala's low oil level light comes on whenever I start my car or turn it off, I replace the level sensor and the pressure switch and it still does it.

Our impala never had the light on until I broke the original. Put in an aftermarket, and it's almost always on now.
