I have heard from a few people that the 97 trans was actually stronger than the 98-02 trans. And idk why people think this but the 97 GTP has the 4T65E-HD trans just like any other 98-03 GP, only the GTs and SEs in 97 had the 4T60E.

I believe you are correct it was only the non-GTPs
