My car has been making a howling noise from the rear tire for a while now. I'm pretty sure its a wheel bearing but it the sound doesn't get louder when turning. Today I was driving it and my ABS, Traction Control and Variable Effort steering lights all came on saying disabled. Could this be a wheel bearing issue?

Edit: Car is an 06 Grand Prix GT

More then likely yes. Bad hubs cause all those issues.

How would I go about checking the wheel hub. Pulling the wheel at 9 and 3? Checking for frayed wires?

jack the wheel up, lugs still tight, then grab the top of the wheel with both hands, push and pull slowly, and firmly, if the hub is loose you'll feel it.

you can also watch the rotor if it moves inside the pads the hub is also bad. rotor is bolted to the hub between the wheel. caliper wont move as its bolted to the knuckle.

Would that be safe to do with a scissor jack? I don't own a regular jack or stands.

Isnt that the stock jack? I dont like them, especially because they use the pinch welds. You can pickup a jack and stands from HF for not that much and I'm sure it will gets its moneys worth of uses. If your rockers are soild you could use it I guess just don't get under the car where you can get smushed.

Edit: just saw you have an 06 so pinch welds shouldnt be rusted or missing.

if your rockers are still solid you can use it, its there to take a tire off, to get it off it needs to get the tire off the ground, so it will work to test a bad hub.

you can get a cheap 2 ton little floor jack style jack for like 20 us most of the time. id get one, makes life easy.

I'd be leary of doing this with the scissor jack. Mine pretzeled on me when I was doing my motor mounts; raised the car to remove the stands, started lowering the car then rapid lower occured. Had to use my hi-lift jack to raise the car to get the blocks of wood out. Not a cool experience.

Well I did it with the scissor jack. No play in the hub. But still howls like crazy.

Probably still the bearing if its howling, and if your ABS is random2 kicking in you might have broken wires or almost broken wires. Mine did that, ABS would randomly come on (I assume from the chnage in resistance or whatever from the broke wires enough to triggee the ABS) then the ABS light came on full time.
