Thread: Scraping noise when brakes not applied?

07 Grand Prix GT. Since I purchased the car I noticed that the parking brake sticks partially engaged for a bit after releasing it. I had applied it to do some work yesterday and it did the same thing. It's been a while since I last had to use it, but it slowly backed off as I drove it afterwards. Now I am hearing a grinding/scraping kind of noise that goes along with the rotation of the wheels and stops when I apply the brakes. Would this be that it just needs to work it's way back to normal as I drive, or a sign that it wrecked a braking component?

And as a side question, what would make the parking brake to stick on after being fully released?

The brake cable probably needs lubing, the return spring isn't strong enough to release it if it's rusty or gummed up. You should be using the parking brake every time you park, as it avoids unnecessary wear and tear on the CV joints and transmission.

I never did on flat parking spots since it is an automatic.. But I would if there was anything of a slant or if I needed to work on it. So how can I lube it?

As far as lubing it goes, I've never had to do it on a GP so I can't be specific, but it should be similar to any other car. Take off the rear wheels and get some specific cable lube, or some nice spray lube (NOT WD40) with graphite or lithium, and hit all the exposed cables, try to spray in the liner the best you can too. Get under the front and find where the cable starts and spray those too. Wait a few minutes for it to "wick" through the cable. Engage and release the brake a few times to try to cause the lube to move up/down the cable and repeat if necessary.

Ok, so again I don't know much about this, so how does the parking brake work? It uses the regular brake system? So the noise I'm hearing might be something like my caliper or something? Might be a coincidence where some debri got in somewhere from the rain, but that might be hopeful thinking
