Thread: Rear Brakes

So I just did both rear Hub assemblies on my 06 GP GXP. My problem is on the driver side I couldn't get the rotor to go back over the hub. It looked like it was getting caught on the inner pads (i'm assuming they are for the parking brake). I eventually was able to push on it right and it went on but when I put everything back together the well didn't spin freely. So i drove it down my street and back and it seemed normal. Also the other side was fine, the rotor went on easy and the wheel spun freely. What could the problem be?

You may have needed to adjust the parking brake shoes. There was another thread about this a while back, I'll see if I can find it. If they're dragging badly, they will get very hot and something's gonna happen.

There should be an adjuster like this. A little adjuster wheel on the right of that cylindrical thing


Also make sure they're fully releasing and that the spring isn't broken, or the cable snagged or rusted.

i did notice that but the setup didn't look like regular rear brakes, lol. So i didn't mess with it. I will look into it tomorrow morning thanks!

When I painted my rotors, (I reused them obviously) There was a little rust on the inside of the rotor that always scraped the shoes inside no matter what. It was already adjusted too, there was just some rust on the rotor. The wheel spun very freely when it was up in the air too, it would spin for like 15 seconds. Whatever I did, I couldn't get that little "squeak, squeak" to stop. Then I just did a little bit of braking using the parking brake, and that solved that issue. It just took a little wearing that rust off and now they work great and no more noise. They sounded pretty horrible when I'd use them to stop from roll at about 10 mph, they squeaked so loud lol.

My problems never end. So now on my way home from work I got off the freeway and apply the brakes. Pedal went all the way down to the floor but vehicle did come to a stop. When I got home I inspected the brakes . Come to find out my caliper on the driver side came off completely. Now when I did the rear hubs I took the mountain and the caliber of as one piece. So I do not know how this happened. Bolts are missing for the caliper and I'm leaking brake fluid from the piston . My question is will this week's stuff once of push the piston all the way back in?

Wait..What? I'm assuming you're asking will it push back in and work fine? Yes it will, you have to open the bleeder screw and push it back in, and re-bleed the brakes. Make them TIGHT. And you said the bolts that you didn't loosen(on the caliper) came out?

Yes I never took the caliper off when I did the rear hubs. I just unbolted the mount for them and took the mount and caliper off as one piece so I am not sure how my caliper just randomly came completely unbolted from the mount

Well I guess make sure all bolts are tight when re-assembled. I always double check all bolts relating to what I was working with.

So I had a rough morning. I went to Autozone to get the bolts and they're two different times. So I bought both in return the other one. Then after doing that I found out that the inner brake pad had fallen off. So the sucky part is that my wife had already left for work this morning. So I rode my sons bike up to Advance Auto and picked up new brake pads . So after getting this I completed I went and double checked the passenger side. And guess what... Those bolts were coming loose 2. So I replace the pads on that side and bleed all brakes . I have had quite a busy morning but I'm glad my car is running good. One last question. are the washers for the banjo bolts that going to the caliper reusable? I had to disconnect the caliper on the driver side in order to get the piston back in properly. The brakes aren't leaking so I'm not sure.

Just drove it to work and I checked and all is good. I personally appreciate alls input whether on my question or others. because eventually it might be helpful to someone else. Thanks again for the help you guys!
