Re: suspension replacement questions..
I ralk to differemt people and some say don't bother and others say do it... not sure what to do...
Just thinking if maybe I do this maybe the ride will improve.. maybe not. Cant decide to keep the carnor not.. but probably won't do anything for 3-6months. So what to do..
the biggest problem is my rear inner tires are completly bald. So now I need new tires. Someone said an alignment will fix it. I think its the rear struts and stuff... I need to do something.. how much do I fix?
Re: suspension replacement questions..
a 4 wheel alignment runs about 70 bucks here. and theres always used tires for sale to keep things on the cheap side.
you would need new/used good tires first, then get it aligned. you may need camber bolts installed in the rear struts. most shops if any good will go over your car if something is not right with it they should tell you, aka try to sell you some parts. some parts if they are bad the shop wont even do the alignment because it wont come out right due to the worn parts.
Re: suspension replacement questions..
Woyldnt you think at 98k miles and 13 years old everything has got to be worn.. if not its got to be close..
But I think your saying get the tires and then have the alignment checked.
Re: suspension replacement questions..
if the inside of your back tires are bald theres a problem back there, seen this with a few other members. camber is off.
most shops wont align it with bad tires on the car, at least they shouldn't. and like i said the shop should going over the suspension (looking to make money on the parts you may or may not need)
go to a place that does computer alignments, you get a nice print out of the before and after specs.
Re: suspension replacement questions..
found a good website that talks about uneven tire wear..
http://www.aa1car.com/library/tire_wear.htm
still make me nervous about what is going on back there.. I am just skeptical its just an alignment. I'm sure there are bushings or struts that are worn. My biggest fear is the strut tower is leaning... look in the beginning of this thread.. did that rust damage the strut tower? Then what.. I scheduled a free inspection to have them look at the car. maybe it can be fixed with a simple alignment. and of course new tires. Found some used Goodyears RSA's 245/45/18's... might work and save me some money..
Re: suspension replacement questions..
So my alighnment is way offf... they tell me I will probably need 4 magna cam bolts. At a cost of $228.00.. does this sound ok?
Luckily the struts and bushings are ok..
Re: suspension replacement questions..
im pretty sure they cost about 20 bucks each, and you have to slot the strut where the bolt goes through the knuckle. all it is, is a cam bolt, they turn the bolt it moves the strut then they make it tight.
you could install them yourself, then take it in for an alignment.
Re: suspension replacement questions..
But is there something custom about the bolt? THEY SAY MY TOE IS WAY OFF.. and they need it for adjustment. Is that true? Or are they just concerned the bolt is seized in rust. They gave me the readings if it would mean anything to you..
I saw various bolts for $10.00. Ill call another shop and get a price. This particular shop wanted $23.00. For tjhe bolt and like $28.00 for install. Per tire
I see a couple of different nolts on rockauto.. a moog and a raybestos
Moog. K90474 -1 TO 1 DEG setting
Or
Raybestos 6161036 -1-3/4 to 1 3/4..
Re: suspension replacement questions..
the camberbolt lets then adjust the camber. toe in and out is the tie rods needing to be adjusted.
Re: suspension replacement questions..
so what part do i buy. see the post before yours.. i edited it..
where is this bolt? is hard to replace and do as you suggest. Seems rediculous to spend $228 for 4 bolts that they need to adjust anyway.. especially when 4 bolts are only $42.00
Re: suspension replacement questions..
they both look to be very close to the same. id just go with the cheaper one myself. probably the same, just different companys making them.
Re: suspension replacement questions..
they have different adjustment degrees. do you have any pictures of what and where this is? could I really do this myself?
Re: suspension replacement questions..
thersa few threads where guys who are lowered needed them. then a bunch of threads where they had the inner tire wear and put them in.
hit google, how to install camber bolts on a grant prix. add "grandprixforums.net" at the end. or the start. see what pops up.
its truly is as easy as removing the top bolt, loosen the lower bolt, then installing this cam bolt. it replaces the top bolt from the strut to the knuckle.
Re: suspension replacement questions..
ok so now i am really confused... I have been searching about camber bolts and some of the threads imply the camber is way off because the struts/springs are sagging.. Id rather spend $350.00 on new struts then $225 on bolts. is there any truth to this?

are these the bolts that hold the strut on the bottom? how the hell do they adjust?
Re: suspension replacement questions..
they replace the top bolt that holds the strut on.
the bolt has a cam gear on it so as you turn the bolt it moves the knuckle in out out as needed. its what controls the camber of the wheels.

Re: suspension replacement questions..
its the top bolt in the rea but the bottom bolt in the front? still can't see how these adjust camber.. so this is one of 2 bolts that hold the strut to the wheel? but would new struts also fix this problem?
Re: suspension replacement questions..
Re: suspension replacement questions..
that was very helpful... all i got to say is $228 f'kn dollars for a bolt they need to adust anyway.. what a ripoff.. so how do i know what bolt i need? seems like certain bolts give you certain offsets.. so if the bolt has a range thats what i can adjust in between?
I wonder if I can get those bolts out... top on the rear and bottom on the front would be the ones to replace?
why cant i find this part at autozone or oreilly's?
Re: suspension replacement questions..
you said you had your spec sheet from the first attempt at the shop right?
post a pic of the sheet or type them out. it should say whats acceptable, and what it is right now. so you'd need a bolt that moves it as many deg's as your out or more to make it right.
