Thread: Replacement Stereo - 2005 GT

I am looking for some suggestions on a replacement stereo for a 2005 GT. The stock stereo is a single CD system that has no auxiliary inputs. I would like something with inputs. Touch screen would be nice but not a deal breaker. I would like to keep in under $300 (less would be better) including the harness. Can I install it myself?

Also, is it worthwhile upgrading the speakers? Any suggestions?

Thanks REDCOMPG! A harness of some sort is needed to make any aftermarket stereo work, correct? Is this a DIY project or does it have to be professionally installed? How does the ahvp4200 fit in the dash (is there gaps)? What speakers are you using? How do they compare to the stock?

I would assume you would lose steering wheel controls though unless using adapter?? I am also looking for something but would like to keep my steering wheel controls too!

Thanks for the advice. After doing some more research I'm debating between the following:

1. Leave the stock radio in and adding a DIY auxiliary input (directions in the How-To section). The radio is in good condition except for some of the lights being burned out (one inside display and some buttons). Maybe using some of the money I save to buy better speakers.

2. Leave stock radio and buy an adapter plug (AAI-GM12). Seems like less fuss and more reliable.

3. Buy a cheaper radio (around $100) and the harness.

I'd be interested on everyone's opinions on which is best. It's a family car and we're not into loud music or a lot of base.

I bought a Pioneer AVHP4100, slightly different button layout than the previous poster, with one round volume knob. This series of radio looks great and can be set to have the same red lighting as the rest of the car. It does require a module to keep the door chimes and all. But this one has iPod capability, bluetooth for phone and speakers. The only option this one does not have is the navigation. I use a Garmin for that in this car. GP GT radio.JPG

Had I done my homework, I would not have bought the AVIC-Z150BH, which has navigation.

Why? Smartphones and tablets can use the latest maps. I've had the Pioneer head unit for just over a year and maybe, just maybe I will be able to update the map for the first time... for $120... sometime this fall. I use Waze because it has user supplied traffic and police speed trap information. I'm using a Nexus 7 FHD which has a 1080p grade display. Were I so inclined to watch a movie while driving, it'd be a far more satisfying experience. I can output the audio from the Nexus into the Pioneer head unit.

There are multiple discussions of using a Nexus 7 as a head unit in this forum.

personally. if i was going the double din route. I would shell out some extra coin, and get one that navigation equipped...

actually. considering i spend ALOT of time in a car. I like to have all the "toys". Like the back up cam, Bluetooth, nav, sat radio, you name it..

The 2014 Pioneer models have a feature... not yet implemented... that will allow on the fly map data upgrading. It requires access to the internet, either via wireless hot spots or tethering from a smartphone. Since I sent over a grand to Pioneer for the 2013 flagship unit last year, I'm not willing to do so again this year.

All of the 2014 Pioneer head units will be Carplay ready when they release the firmware for it, supposedly later this year.

Thanks everyone! Unfortunately my wife got in an accident last week and the car is being totaled. We might be going to look at a 2007 GXP tonight.....any idea what kind of stereo this will have?

Is that a good stereo or not? Do you know if it has auxiliary inputs?

I still like the Pioneer AVHP 4000 series head units. Mine has bluetooth and it is connected to a backup camera. It has video inputs and a cable for an Apple device to be connected. I also found the hack to watch DVD's and video from a connected device while in drive, not that I actually do it though. Good bang for the buck, but if you need navigation in one box, be prepared to pay for it.

If, I had wanted a GP with every toy, I would have bought the GTP or GPX. (I am actually looking for a GPX local to me.)
