I'm looking into installing a new deck in my 06 Grand Prix, mainly because I want an AUX input in it. I hardly know anything about cars and I'm a broke college student on minimum wage.
I'm wondering if anybody with experience can let me know if it's difficult to do my self and what will I need to install the new deck.
I've called audio places and they're offering anywhere from $270-$320 for the job. I think that's ridiculous. I understand I need some kind of module and a deck kit which alone is worth 130 (from what I was told by the audio exoert).
If anyone can help with resources or instructions on doing it my self I would appreciate it

Go to crutchfield.com. Look for radios on there. Your going to want a double din cause a single din will just look foolish in the newer gen. I would recommend a pioneer avh-x3500bhs. But it's your car so pick what you would like. Then you will need to get the GMOS harness and then if you have steering wheel controls you will have to get another harness. To put the harnesses together with the car isn't hard, it's pretty self explanatory.

Thanks for the response. I'm definitely going to take the advice, however; I was wondering if the GMOS is hard to install? Do I have to cut any wires and reconnect them? Or is just a matter of snapping on the harness. I'm not gonna lie I'm pretty intimated with the whole installation. Is it as easy as it sounds. And is there a difference in the installing of a single din vs a double?

What you do with the GMOS adapter is splice it to the new head unit's harness. For the most part, the colors will match. When you do it this way, you'll be using the OEM speaker wiring, which will save you hours of time running wires to the different speakers.

Take your time, check off on the wiring diagrams which wire you've hooked up, and for gawd's sakes, use a soldering iron and heat shrink and not butt splices.

One note: do not hook up either the mute or amplifier turn on wires to the GMOS. If you use the GMOS adapter, it will run your audio output through the OEM amp if equipped. That's already switched through the ignition switch.

I have wiring instructions on my phone, Ill put a pic on here. Literally all you do is put right speaker wire from GMOS to right speaker wire on radio. Thats literally how it goes. It'll take an hour tops. But for the double din, a single din will look goofy in the 04+ cars. I mean its your car but I would honestly recommend staying double din. And heres a link you can get a great radio for cheap. Its used but its basically brand new.

Take your time and remember the wire colors on the harness match the colors on the deck. There are 2 diffrent GMOS harnesses for these cars. The GMOS-01 is for non amplified factory systems and the GMOS-04 is for the amplified systems which is the monsoon system. The best price I've found for these are on amazon.

Thanks everyone for the advice and information. I'm glad I decided to ask on the forum before I took it to an audio shop. It wasn't as difficult as I taught. Saved money doing it myself. Thx again fellas I appreciate the help!
