The year of your car would be a big help, but generally, if you don't want to run speaker wires, get one of the adapters.

I used the GMOS-04 adapter ostensibly to keep the OnStar. I might have been better served using the -01 adapter instead. My original intent was to keep the Monsoon amplifier together with the chimes. (I sometimes forget to turn the turn signal off.) If you're not going to use a separate amp and reuse the speaker wiring that's already there, get one of the adapters. If you're going to use features like a back up camera, get the adapter. To me, it's worth every penny to eliminate the extra work and frustration that it takes not to use them. Your mileage may vary.

If you do not have a Monsoon amp, I think it takes another adapter. You'll need to do your homework as to which one. Also, some people here have reported "gremlins" introduced by the Metra adapters interfacing with the serial data stream. My first one would intermittently keep the engine running while the retained accessory power (RAP) was on and the key off. There are other adapters out there if that's a concern.
