That's not specific to size...that's specific to whether the speaker was installed correctly and how well the mids play with the subwoofer. If the subs and mids aren't matched well in terms of output then it will sound sloppy. But, what you two are observing is specific to cone size in a sense that a smaller cone does not displace as much energy and therefore, the mids are a closer "match" when looking at a response curve; i.e. sub playing at 140 decibels vs. mids playing 100 decibels. That huge discrepency results in a very skewed response curve. A kick drum plays all the way up through 8khz. So it starts with the sub...plays through the mid...and finishes in the tweeter. If all those speakers are dialed in correctly then you'll get a nice kick in your chest
