Re: Getting new subs want opinons.
I doubt my a/d/s 312RS's will be goin anywhere any time soon, at $300 a piece I plan on getting a lot of use out of them... more then the 7 yrs I've had so far.
But whats this about being careful with aluminum cones? Are they fragile?
the 312rs' have "spun aluminum cones" if i remember right. Welded to the aluminum formers.
Re: Getting new subs want opinons.
If you exceed the Xmech then you WILL put a dent in the cone right where the former meets the cone.
Then its only a matter of time before it falls apart.
Make sure you design the box properly and run a HPF if you're going ported.
Re: Getting new subs want opinons.
Interesting.. About the denting of the cone.
I always run a HPF regardless. Was the nice thing about older a/d/s amps, tons of variable crossovers and different ways you could use them. I think the 2 high pass crossovers on my one a/d/s amp are variable from 40Hz to 300Hz.
Re: Getting new subs want opinons.
I'm talking of an off-50 Hz High pass filter :)
Re: Getting new subs want opinons.
Oh I'm a moron.
I'm thinking of lowpass. yea I never ran a highpass on the subs. I doubt I ever would at 50Hz either, My box was good down to 30Hz in the truck. I remember specifically wanting a 20-25Hz highpass and I wasn't able to do it.
Re: Getting new subs want opinons.
If you're sealed and you design the box properly you don't need to bother with one.
If you're ported, you NEED one.

I use 30hz on my aluminum woofers. I'd prefer 25hz. I use it as a safety
Re: Getting new subs want opinons.
OP says 2 10's arent cuttin it? My Digital Designs 1500 series 10's are more than enough for me... only pushin 500 watts to them. Bigger isnt always better. I tried out some memphis 12's before i got my DD's... i love a 10 in woofer.
Re: Getting new subs want opinons.
"only 500 watts" put 500 watts steady to a voice coil and grab it with your hand and you'll never say that again. listening to music I usually average 5-10 watts.
Re: Getting new subs want opinons.
that statement was comparatively speaking to the other posts pushing near 1000 watts.... in other words... DD's are very efficient. passengers in rear seats often complain about not being able swallow, not being able to see due to vibration and ears hurting at high volume. DD has me sold for life.

Any idea of how many db you were hitting?
Re: Getting new subs want opinons.
no, but these subs hit very hard and clean... not sure if u know alot about DD but they won alotta trophies at the DB Drag finals in the past few years. heres some info Subwoofers: Hand Built in the U.S.A. by Digital Designs | DDaudio.com
Re: Getting new subs want opinons.
They seem to be good from the reading i've done, just the problem is getting them shipped to canada and what not. I am still looking at a guy that has 2 alpine type r 12's and a pdx-1000 for sale. I just don't know what to do...
Re: Getting new subs want opinons.
they dont have a canadian dealer?
Re: Getting new subs want opinons.
I have listened to house music in excess of 130db and did not have problems swallowing or seeing clearly. I'll admit it felt somewhat like being poked in the throat at times.
That was with 150WPC rms x 2 with very high efficiency speakers. I drove other speakers with a 800W Bryston amplifier and was never able to hit those levels.
But what I will say is, at those levels you damage your hearing very fast, even at lower frequencies.
Take it from a 29 yr old with constant ringing in his ears. I stopped before it was too late IMO. I can still hear 17KHz pretty good.
Just be careful. Like I said in other posts, doubling your power only gives you a 3dB increase if your lucky, so if 250w hits 117, 500W will do 120db and 1000W will only be 123. Huge increase in power and heat. with very little increase in output. Its a bottomless pit.
Re: Getting new subs want opinons.
I am actually learning a lot form this thread, my bud has a jimmy hitting well in excess of 140's and it is on the verge of not being able to swallow. i want a good ammount of volume and some quality at the same time, but it's a toss up as to what i want to get.
Re: Getting new subs want opinons.
In response to "10's not being enough" I've seen where 8's were plenty. With all due respect, Matt seems to often insist on things that are overkill.
Whiney : I'm not saying your lieing, but. 126dB is the threshold of pain, and anything above 130 typically causes instant hearing damage. I would assume 140 if you could stand it would burst ear drums.

I don't know what kind of meter they used at our sound competition, but i was hitting 137.6db and i still have no problem hearing in the 17khz range...
Re: Getting new subs want opinons.
ok so i googled around for 2 DD 1510 DB's and im seeing 140+ DB depending on power to the them.
