You are right and you are wrong here. Why? Let me tell ya. Only your headunit might have actual ground wire that is hooked up to the car. Your speakers DO NOT have a ground wire that is hooked up to the chassis. Plain and simple. Big difference. When you say your speakers are grounded to the chassis, that is incorrect. YES obviously they are grounded via the speaker wire's negative ground wire, but they are NOT connected to the chassis in any way. The ground you speak of comes from the Headunit's ground.

All you need to do is get the appropriate adapter to fit your car. Some adapters have the addons for OnStar to keep your chimes and the use of OnStar still available. I have an 03 GTX with OnStar, but i never used it so I went with the adapter that did not have the OnStar addon, which usually runs $150 bucks. My adapter only ran me about $30 bucks and i simply spliced the wires between the adapter and the new HU's wiring and it worked perfectly.

I hope that clears some things up for ya.
