Hey I am not an audio buff so I need a bit of help please. I have a 99 gtp and my problem is my speakers come on and off randomly on there own when the audio system is turned on. One speaker might work for a minute then another might work or may stop working for a while then come back on. I have a factory ac delco deck and all the speakers are original. I am also the original owner of the car. I switched out the factory deck with two others and had the same problem. I also check the decks in another vehicle and there was no problem. some body said it may be a problem with the amp in my vehicle. I have never installed an after market amp in the car and if there is a factory one in it I do not know where to look. Serious responses appreciated. No I am not looking to replace the whole system cause when it works it sounds absolutely great. thank you in advance

If it's a Delco system (not a Bose or not a Monsoon) the amp is on the underside of the glovebox and has a single 24 pin connector on it. How many speakers do you have in the rear, two or four?

Edit: Check your build label in the trunk for the radio code. Look for 'UX7' or 'UQ3'. That will tell us if you have an amplifier.

i have two speakers...they are factory and there is nothing in between them. Yes the whole system is ac delco and it cam with the car. there are six speakers total two in each front door and the two in the back. I have a 99 grand prix gtp. Amazing I can fix any thing on the engine but can not figure out this audio stuff. the only thing under the back is a black cover where the light in the rear window is at. Thanks for your words of help. But I think I have a different grand prix that you are thinking of. I still open for suggestions

If there is only two rear speakers then there is no extra amplifier. You should see code "UX7" on your build label inside your trunk.

I have a UQ3 but do not understand those codes at all. I also have double checked all the speakers to see if they work and they do

Examine very closely the connectors that plug into the back of the radio for any loose or weak wires. The wire is weakest where it goes into the crimp and that's where the problem usually is. I just repaired the shift interlock on my '98 because two of the wires had come apart at the crimp. These wires are buried inside the console and were taped/restrained well but it happened anyway.

Edit: "UQ3" is "Speaker System, Performance Enhanced Audio". You do have an amplifier.

i believe your amp should be the black box inside your trunk. right in the middle

We cleared this up via PM so I thought I would post it here so evryone could see in case they ever had the same problem:

A solution! Remove the (5) 7 millimeter screws that hold the base of the glovebox door to the instrument panel, then remove the glovebox door by squeezing the two sides together at the top which will allow you to completely take the glovebox door off.
Inside, at the bottom of the cavity you will see a gray plastic box measuring 6" long by 3 3/4" wide by 1 1/2" tall. It has (3) square heatsinks (metal fins) on the passenger side of the box and a blue connector on the driver's side. On the top of the box is either "Delphi" or "Delco" (couldn't make it out) "Electronics".
That gray box is the amplifier. So the amplifier actually sits under the glovebox
This is for Option Code "UQ3"

i believe your amp should be the black box inside your trunk. right in the middle
The amp mounted on the underside of the rear package shelf is the Bose system which came in the later model years (cletus has a '99 GTP) which was Option Code U85.
