Thread: Recommend Me a Replacement for Stock Front Speakers

Well, there's really two options here. Replacing stock with stock, or upgrading.

You can either grab a pair of 5 1/4" speakers for the doors and some tweeters (or run the composite ones with integrated tweeters and have less to worry about) and use these adapters: Amazon.com: Metra 72-4568 Speaker Harness for General Motors (2 Pairs): Computers & Accessories If you reuse the stock tweeter, it has a crossover built in, so just wire it's positive with speaker positive on the adapter and so on. If you upgrade your tweeter, a good set will have you wire in a crossover, so get ready for complexity. Easiest is using composite speakers, next hardest is re-using stock tweeter, hardest is wiring in separate component speakers.

If all you want is to replace blown out speakers, then this is your easiest option by far: ACDelco(R) - Pontiac Grand Prix 2000 GM Original Equipment™ Radio Speaker or just pm me and I'll pick some up at the junkyard.

I just upgraded my sound system for the fun of it over the course of a few months. wstefan20 is right. For simplicity, 5.25" coaxial speakers are going to be the best bet. The factory setup is component with separate tweeters and woofers, so a coaxial won't be the same. But just about any pair of coaxials should be a step up from the factory stuff. Especially 20 year-old factory stuff.

I'd recommend looking for coaxial 5.25" speakers that will work within your budget. I put in some 5.25" Morel Tempo Ultra coaxials for my front speakers and I am very happy with them. Just bolt in and go really. I ran them off of my aftermarket head unit for a few weeks before adding an amp and they worked fine like that. Morel has some more affordable speakers (i.e., Maximo) as well, but any decent brand should be a noticeable improvement.

I would assume any 5.25" will work. If you don't want to do any wiring though, look for any gm set that has separate tweeters. Look on the back of your stock speakers and you'll see the plugs you need to look for. Almost all gm speakers from that era used those connectors. Good luck!

If anyone comes across this thread looking to upgrade to 6.5" etc., the easiest way (and least modification) that I've found is to use a cutoff wheel to make a "box cut" at the angle of the speaker at the top. Essentially you'll be cutting an upside down bullet shape and removing the top of the plastic bracket and cutting into the door a bit. The speaker will then tilt at the factory angle and still point towards the listener, and you can secure with 2 screws in the stock location at the bottom of the bracket. Of course, you'll want to sand and paint the bare cut metal, but it's three cuts and done. This way you don't have to modify the bracket or worry about the window not working or modifying the door panel. Oh, and there's a nice cavity right above the speaker where you have nearly 3/4" depth room to fit a crossover behind the door panel. I usually glue aftermarket tweeters in the stock location and they sound great. I'll try to throw up a few pictures when I have time.

Agreed, and the adapters though not really needed are listed in my post above and make the install plug and play for aftermarket speakers
