Hello to all, my 98 gtp randomly stopped using third gear. It uses all other gears just fine, conveter still locks in overdrive. Any suggestions? I looked at a solenoid flow chart and i dont think its a solenoid because i would be missing another gear other than third.

mine started out as a rpm surge of like 200 rpm's light on the gas in 3 rd gear, then one day, it was just gone.

1 st to 2 nd shifted like a champ still, and if you got it to 45 mph od would hold.

yeah you can till drive on the highway, but your not passing any one, give it a bit of gas and its back into second at 65 mph, not fun lol

mine only had the chugging for a week or so. if you just drive it normal, you'd have never noticed it. im a bit anal and feel every little thing the car does. a week later 3 rd was just gone.

Maybe, do you have any stored codes? Most trans stuff doesn't kick on a light btw.

3rd can be clutches or a bad sprag. If you want to test that 3rd is bad.. unplug the connector at the trans and try to drive it. That should default you to only third gear.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

the round ish looking one atop the d/s of the tranny, pinch its wide side and pull it off. or pull the fuse in the fuse box, same result.

Good new and bad news. Good news is likely nothing physically wrong with 3rd... Bad news, something electrical is unhappy with the trans. Have fun xD

Its gotta be something electrical! I just dont know what, if third works when you default it, the trans isnt bad. Everything else works fine, so somewhere electrical is messed up.
