I have a 99 gtp. I have new fuel filter, plugs and wires. Also new tps and air ideal valve. So my issue is when I start it up it seems like it's sputters and then after few seconds it smooths out. Thanks for any help.

    Sputters as in?
Does it rev up past 1k and then drop down below 1k and then up past 1k again and then down below 1k again like 3 or 4 times?

not good enough. you take the maf out i hope? if not you may have killed it with the carb cleaner. maf should never come in contact with any fluid but maf cleaner.

if you dont want to take the TB off. remove the screen, theres a snap ring around the outer edge, then the screen comes out. re move the maf from the top of the Tb, then open the blade and spray inside, then use a old tooth brush to scrub inside, clean the walls of the TB as well as the sides and back of the butterfly blade.

then take a rag over the tooth brush, spray, and wipe clean with the rag over the tooth brush.

I'd rather take it off. So ill go that route and get new maf. Bc I new better but I didn't think about it at the time. The car has 170k so it's probably due for good cleaning.

buy a new gasket first, and junk yard mafs are best and cheaper then new aftermarket mafs that dont work well at all.

most used mafs are like 40 bucks tops, jy, or ebay.

did all this start after the tune up and tb cleaning? if so, car off unplug the maf, then fire it up, see if it runs better like that, if so the maf is bad most of the time.

I'm not for sure if it was b4 or after. I'm thinking it was b4. So a new maf is a bad idea you say.

the tb will be a breeze then.

oh the maf is bolted in with torx security bolts. you need a special socket to get the bolts out, or cut a slot across the top of them and use a flat head screw driver.

how i got mine off. i used a grinder with a thin cutting wheel, a hacksaw also works well.

I need to take the TB off of mine soon and clean it out. Mine takes a few cranks to start and then sputters (acts like it wants to die) for a few seconds when it does start. So maybe my TB needs a good cleaning.

Wow, my bad. I was unawares that they stopped making them out of 18K gold on the later model years. Sorry to confuse, was not my intention.

I just had this same issue with my 99 GTP. I pulled the TB and scrubbed it clean. Scottydoggs is right, don't waste the cash on a new MAF, the junkyard ones typically work just fine and are a lot cheaper. Save the money for more mods. Anyways, after I cleaned my TB and MAF sensor (with MAF cleaner) and re-installed them all, my issue was resolved. Its worth a shot. If it doesn't work, then at least you have a clean TB and MAF sensor!
