I decided to pull the heads on my L67 this winter cam it,port the blower etc.I think it would be a good idea to put bearings in it also.Besides checking the timing chain tensioner is there anything else i should look for or replace/upgrade?Should i use the upgraded oil pump kit? Any input would be greatly appreciated.Do i need any specialized tools to do what i want to do?

If you pull apart the bottom end, you'll have to check everything and be sure it all goes back together 100% within spec or you'll have a 100 mile engine.

It's a safer bet to leave it alone unless its that old and tired. In which case a used engine might be a better alternative.

There is an upgraded oil pump kit now?

Typically an S III timing cover would be considered an upgrade in terms of oiling.

Port the heads. Blower porting won't matter much compared to the heads.

I'm sure this has been answered a hundred times already.

I wanted to have the heads checked atleast and i was going to pull a bearing or two and check them.I was asking if the upgrade kit for thr oil pump is worthwhile or not? I wasnt aware the timing chains had oiling issues i know the tensioners go bad.I will likely clean up the heads a little myself this is a very low buck build and i just wanted to inspect everything and replace whats needed.

I honestly wasn't aware there was an upgrade for the oil pump.

Unless you're referring to the oil pressure spring. Which apparently is the same as the older ones. Perhaps a fresher spring is why people see more oil pressure? More investigation should be done there. But on the whole, it won't matter.

The series III timing covers have larger oil feed holes.

Heads would be well worth spending time on.

Ok Thanks Matt i saw the oil pump upgrade on zzp site i think (yeah i know) looks like just a spring, shim and gasket.Just curious cause i planned to run 5w30 in it.I am not a fan of making huge oil pressure i think its a waste.I asked cause you guys know a lot more than me and the members have went thru these things already and was just curious.Dont want to make any mistakes....Thanks

I am doing the exact same thing this winter. Have mine down to the block and waiting on parts, cleaning stuff in the meanwhile. I didnt touch the bottom end, but I have ported my blower, and added a block off plate, modded my LIM via BillBoost's thread, and ported my TB along with removing a bulk of the MAF dam. I was previously decided to not port the heads myself and just leave them stock flow, but if I find a decent guide and find the time I may pull out the dremel...

Also I have headers, MPS, polished aluminum valve covers, new stock timing set, XP cam, shift kit, etc on the way from ZZP!

Rebuilt mine due to a chipped piston. Just going back together now. New bearings, pistons, all done at a machine shop I trust.
