I have a problem with my 1998 Grand Prix GTP that is causing major headaches.

When I go out in the car to do some errands the car will drive normally until I’ve done about 8-10 miles of stop & go driving, with the engine being switched off during my periods of time in stores, etc. Then with very little warning the engine will die, sometimes making a rattling sound. I have discovered that when this happens if I unplug the connector to the Ignition Control Module, and immediately reconnect it, the engine will start again and run normally until this happens again.

In recent months I have posted on this forum about a couple of other issues that have been answered but I figured I would mention them in case my current problem is related.

The first one deals with a non-start issue that was fixed when I replaced the Crank Position Sensor. The ERG valve was also replaced because of the ODB II fault code I was getting at that time. The second deals with a concern about a dent in the oil pan, and I did mention this current problem at the end of that thread because that’s when it first started happening.

So far, as mentioned, the crank position sensor and ERG valve have been replaced. I have also replaced the Ignition Control Module. I have checked everywhere I can for any damaged wiring or connectors without finding anything. The engine is not overheating, the Service Engine Soon light is not lit, my CarMD scanner is not reporting any error codes.

    Any help would be appreciated.

The fact that disconnecting and reconnecting the ICM is odd. Sometimes those pins can not make good contact in the connector. Or maybe it's wiring that you can't see and moving it fixes the issue.

    Thanks for your reply Bill.
The ICM is new so there shouldn't be any problem with the pins on it. Do you know if it's possible to disassemble the connector to clean/tighten the contacts that connect to the pins on the ICM?

It doesn't appear to be a simple thing. I have suggested swapping it out in the past. It connects to the crank sensor, cam sensor, a ground by the coil packs and then to the ICM and main harness.
