    I have an 05 gtp that has been a very good car till now. The other day while driving i noticed that it was running a little hotter than usual. So when i got home checked the coolant level it was a little low but then I took the radiator cap off and it had a whole bunch of brown slug on it I looked down in the radiator and there was some in there too. So there is oil getting in to my coolant my question is does this mean I have a blown head gasket or could it just be the intake manifold gasket. On a side note the car doesn't blow white smoke but you can smell the coolant when you first start it up. Any thought on the situation.

    You have no motor problems.


    You have the dexcool problem.

    I bet its the original coolant that came with the car.

    Time for a flush to get all the junk out and get new coolant in the car.

    Have you checked the oil? Pull the dipstick and see if the oil looks milky. If so, time for LIM gaskets.

    The coolant and radiator are brand new like 2 months ago. I did pressure test the radiator and it was losing pressure and could not see anything leaking. I checked the oil and it wasn't milky it looked normal. I don't have any pictures of the slug i cleaned the cap off and haven't driven the car since then.

    It is possible the gasket between the charger and LIM is leaking. That would push coolant into the cylinders and it would burn.
    You say you smell coolant when you start it. Burnt or not burnt coolant? If you smell unburnt, it may have a leak near the air intake for the cabin (passenger side back).

    Its very hard to get rid of all the sludge completely. If you've ever replaced the water pump or LIM gaskets before you'll see that all that sludge sticks to the inside of the engine very well. Dexcool is not the best solution for antifreeze for any vehicle, but it works to help as a cooling agent. When it gets dirty or mixed with other coolants, its the nastiest and most clogging stuff I've ever seen. I'll have to see if I can find some pictures that I took when i tore my engine down, the coolant clogged the water ports in the heads, it was really bad. Is the car leaking any coolant at all? Also your head gaskets are fine, trust me you'd know if they were blown. Your exhaust would be blowing white smoke, and water/coolant. Your temperature will go up in the red area, and will not cool back down. Start worrying when the car doesn't cool down. If the temperature goes up to 210-220, and your fans haven't already kicked on by that time to cool it off, or maybe it has kicked on, but your still overheating then you have a pretty major problem. When you start diagnosing cooling problems, look for the obvious things first, And cheaper... Look at your radiator cap, and make sure you arent missing the rubber seal, or cracked... or just missing the whole spring and everything. If you are, make sure you replace it with the same type of cap. Every radiator cap has a different pressure rating, so on stuff like that, I just get the stock radiator cap the car came with. If its not the cap. Bleed your cooling system. Make sure your thermostat is opening and closing correctly. And make sure your fans are turning on when they are suppose to turn on. Pretty much all of this is a starting point, and its very easy to do all this, you don't have to be a pro-mechanic or anything.

    Thanks for the replies. The water pump and thermostat have been replaced. When I smell coolant it doesn't smell burnt but I didn't smell it the other day when I was driving it.
