So I'm getting a used 98 style ported TB, the ZZP stage 1. I'd like to remove the MAF hump thing locally and make it like this:

I'm just a bit confused because it looks like ZZP doesn't offer removing the MAF hump for the 98 style, or more precisely they don't offer the "stage 2" for that TB.

So my question is, if it's actually possible to have that part trimmed off or not for the 97-98 type.

The '97-'98 TB's technically don't have a "MAF hump". They have an entire MAF housing. On the '97-'98 TB's that I've modified, I cut out the lower half of that housing area and smoothed and shaped what remained.

    THIS

    Becomes THIS

That's the before and after pics of one of the first TB's I did. If you are good with a Dremel, you can also cut out the upper portion of the throttle bar so there is a bit less restriction at WOT. If you intend on cutting the MAF housing down, don't be afraid to use a hack saw to get started.

Theoretically, that Stage 1 TB with the lower half of the MAF housing cut out should actually flow a little more air than a stage 2 newer one because the inlet of the '97-'98 TB is larger than the newer one, and the MAF is less intrusive.

'99-'03 TB on left with the MAF hump removed and some epoxy in place (not yet sanded and smoothed) vs a modified '97-'98 on right

if you are clever enough with a dremal, i would say go to a local junk yard and buy a North star TB and use that one.

i had a blower and North star that i fabbed up for a friend no adapter needed. we used a stock l67 cable bracket modified to fit. and since the blower inlet was ported the blade had room to move... on a non ported blower a north star TB blade will scrap and not go 100% ... if using an adapter this might not be an issue though.

i also used some quick steel epoxi and built up the side of the TB so i could drill a 1/4" air passage for the PCV system! the 98 sensor fit right in the maf adapter for the north star as well. then it was just wiring up the TPS sensor. the IAT is the same connector and prob the same motor IIRC

... I know locally junkyards have TB's for about $50-$70 i dont know how much time you have to cut and shape a 97-98 TB but for me i would rather spend a little more $ and about the same amount of time to get a much bigger TB on the car. and the majority of the dremalling will be to open up the inlet to the blower!!!
