I've been dealing with this issue for a while, I can't figure it out. My car sometimes won't start. It cranks, gets to around 400 RPM, then dies. If I give it throttle for a few seconds, it will run fine. This issue is completely random, and I never really know when it's going to happen.

I'm wondering about a faulty MAF.

Does it restart right away? Or do you have to wait?

    Fixed up your title.
I agree. Something is not idling the motor properly. I forget if VE kicks in that early. Some tunes appear to use it, others don't seem to.

I've replaced the IAC like 3 times. My car used to never start at all. After the new IAC, it was fine. I'm not sure if this is my issue. I have a feeling it's the MAF. Does anyone have an old MAF they don't want?

Zef, are you asking if it will restart right away after it's been running? Or restart after it failed to start up?

I'm not sure if VE is used or not, but I do know that my car barely runs on VE (MAF unplugged). I haven't had the time to tune it because I've always heard it's unnecessary.

Lots of folks say it's unnecessary and I've heard that on some cars...its unused until the maf is unplugged.

My experience is on a Bonneville and wow, huge difference tuning the VE. It idled nicer, drove smoother, you name it. there was an actual difference.

When the car fails to start, does it need to sit awhile before it starts again. Or can you just turn the key off, and then restart it right away?

And I agree with Bill. On my 97 GTP, I notice a huge difference doing a VE tune first. Actually helps my gas mileage too. Definitely a must for a good tune.

It does restart right away, if I give it gas. If I don't, it won't start. I haven't tried waiting a while after it fails to start to see if it fires up.

Maybe I'll try tune VE. I have no experience with it though. I don't really know where to start with it.
