I broke something and I'm pretty sure it's coming from the front cover. I'll post up what i actually broke after i find out, i'm thinking it's my rollmaster.

Do i have to lower the cradle to get the crank pulley off?

If something did break on my rollmaster and the timing was off, is it possible i kissed a piston with a valve?

Yes. We have interference engines and if the timing is off they can meet.

If your timing chain is indeed broke or damaged i'd suggest yanking the heads off too. With that cam in there you definately did something internal.

Now if you had a stock cam, you might of had a chance. I've known people with 1.9 setups break valve springs and never make piston to valve contact. With a cam, clearances change...

what sound did you have coming from the front cover? was it just some kind of grinding?
It may just be what happened to me and the gear split, making a bunch of noise. If that's the case then your valves may be ok. Chances are the oil pump gear is what's holding your timing gear together.

We(me and 2 buddies) think the gear split and then somehow came back together but a few degrees off. I was getting into the throttle and it sounded like a backfire and my pull was instantly stopped and the car was idling like crap and a heard a tick. After pulling over the car wouldn't start but it turned over. After my friend arrived, i showed him it wouldn't start, he then asked me to put the gas to the floor. The car started but it didn't run well and there was a noise coming from the front cover(he mentioned it was fast enough to be bottom end). It acts like the timing is off. I haven't touched the car since monday the 7th because i'm pissed and upset so i'm taking my time getting to it. I'm hoping I'm just gonna have to replace the rollmaster.

Can i measure the height of the valves with the covers off, to check for a bent valve?

If you don't want to pull the heads, a bore scope through the spark plug holes would be the best way.

Sometimes you can tell that a valve is bent by looking at the heads with the cover off. But In this case it might be slight enough that it isn't seating properly causing a leak.

Chances are when you pull the cover off, and if the gear is split you aren't going to be able to check and see if the engine is still in time. The gear will just fall right off.

I don't want to pull the heads but i will if i find anything suspicios. Good think i got reusable rocker bolts, arp head studs, and MLS HG. I'm gonna dig in tonight and hopefully i'll know the extent of the repair.

    Well,

First off i don't have a Rollmaster, it's a JP. Second it wasn't coming from the front cover but it was close to the front cover.

I'll get some pics once the heads are off. Do you think there is any chance that head will be usable?

I doubt that head survived. You'll be lucky if one head has survived IMO. Pieces can work there ways into other cylinders when pistons pop, keep that mind. Definatly consider minimum of one new head. If your lucky, the block maybe bored over a little and rebuilt. With that said, i'd suggest some forged slugs next go around...

    I'm looking at getting a L26.

I had a xp and zzptranny installed in may of last year(07) in grand rapids. I spent last summer diagnosing a tranny with no 3rd gear. Sent it back and the new tranny overheated all the time. I'm begining to understand the threads that pop up everynow and again titled "I'm fed up blah blah blah!!!".
