People say you can run a VS Cam on stock valve springs...if your shifting at BONE stock settings I could see it being fine...but IMO I wouldn't chance it hinting at valve float and get stronger springs...I recommend GM L76 (G8 GT) Springs, Yellow #90 LS6's, or Crow 105's. Don't buy Comp 105's...they've been "fixed" but I wouldn't still take chances after seeing all the bad batches and busted valve springs destroying heads/pistons.
I ran an XP Cam on LS6's for well over 40K...had the idle set at 800? IIRC. It was noticeable but didn't clatter your teeth to bits like my Thrasher does sitting at 625 with poly mounts all around. Fun yes, daily driveable...maybe once a week on a nice day LOL.
I'd go with whatever intercooler you'd like, it is a great purchase either way, injectors...you'd be looking at 42.5lb. ones will be plenty...I'd also recommend starting on a 3.2" and working your way down...don't see why you can't run a 2.8" with a Cammed/Intercooled GenV setup with the right tuning. At this mod level I would also tell you to get a Wideband setup...with those mods; tuning with the narrowband is like running blindfolded. You might make it...might not...
If I was in your position though...a VS with an Intercooler and the right tuner/pulley size/injectors...I wouldn't see a XP/S1X car totally DESTROYING it in a heads up race with the same exact mods...it might be a little faster but for the daily driving aspect of things, the VS would hardly be noticeable...then you could also run a set of 1.7 or 1.8 rockers on the VS...and make it bigger than the XP or S1X farther down the road if you get bored
What mistakes were made with the VS? There are plenty of setups running deep into the 12's with the right tuner. Also, learn from your own and pull your front cover. I bet 20 to 1 you don't have much of a dampner left if any at all. After 40K I had pieces of it left with an XP. Just an FYI.
